County 4-Hers earn honors at State Fair

Edmunds County 4-H Members exhibited 111 static exhibits at the 2018 South Dakota State Fair in Huron last week. Several members also participated in the Special Foods Contest, Horticulture Skill-A-Thon, and Consumer Decision Making Contest.

Several members participated in Youth in Action events. Hannah Beyers, Lincoln Beyers, and Kathryn Kilber were in the Special Foods Contest. Hannah received a purple ribbon for her Sausage & Cheese Biscuits, Lincoln received a purple ribbon for his Tuna Salad, and Kathryn received a blue ribbon for her Mama Marian's Hotdish.

Myra Toennies participated in the Horticulture Skill-A-Thon. She placed third overall and received a purple ribbon and the third place rosette.

Participating in the Consumer Decision Making contest were Senior Bridget Fuhrmann, Junior Hannah Beyers, and Beginner Lincoln Beyers. Bridget received a blue ribbon and Hannah and Lincoln received purples.


There were 82 livestock exhibits representing Edmunds County. Several members were awarded top honors in their division. Junior Brady Beitelspacher received third Overall Market Steer, Champion Division 1 Crossbred Steer, and Reserve Champion Division 2 Crossbred Steer. Beginner Jillian Fischer received first Overall Best of Breed with her Polish Senior Doe Rabbit and Best of Breed with her French Lop Doe. Beginner Garrison Heinz received Champion Commercial Roasters with his pair of Rainbow Chickens. Beginner Haleigh Holt had the Champion Charolais Heifer. Beginner Charli Rawden received Reserve Champion Miniature Hereford.

Several members participated in the Showmanship contests. Haleigh Holt received a purple and second place overall in Beginner Beef Showmanship. Bryce Beitelspacher received a purple and fifth place overall in Senior Beef Showmanship. Other placers in beef showmanship were beginner Maggie Holt purple and Senior Cody Forkel blue. Beginner Garrison Heinz received a purple in Poultry Showmanship. Beginner Jillian Fisher received a blue in Rabbit Showmanship. Junior Chloe Jager received a blue in Market Meat Goat Showmanship. Senior Chelsea Cordsen received a blue in Swine Showmanship. Beginner Kaleb Scherr received a blue in Dairy Cattle Showmanship.

There were eight entries in the Breeding Beef Class. In the Commercial division Cody Forkel received a blue ribbon. Haleigh Holt received a purple ribbon for her Charolais heifer. In the Chianina division Cody Forkel and Austin Rawden received blue ribbons. Maggie Holt received a purple ribbon for her Hereford heifer. In the Mainetainer division Jacob Jung received a blue ribbon. Charli Rawden received a purple ribbon for her Mini Hereford heifer. In the Red Angus division Kale Pharis received a purple ribbon.

Market Beef had six entries. Brady Beitelspacher received two purple ribbons for his Crossbred Market Steers. Bryce Beitelspacher received a blue ribbon for his Chianina market Steer and a purple for his Hereford Market Steer. Caleb Johnson received a blue ribbon for his Crossbred Market Steer. Gabe Johnson received a blue ribbon for his Crossbred Market Steer.

Market Meat Goats had eight entries. Chloe Jager received one purple and three blue ribbons. Avery Sylte received a purple and a blue ribbon. Josie Sylte received two purple ribbons.

Breeding Sheep had 14 entries. In the Targhee Division Brady Kilber received one purple and one blue ribbon, Kathryn Kilber two purples and one blue ribbon, and Tessa Kilber two purples and one blue ribbon. Brady and Kathryn received red ribbons in the Southdown division. In the Suffolk Division Josie Sylte received a purple ribbon. In the Commercial Meat Type Class Avery Sylte received a red ribbon, Colby Sylte a blue, and Josie Sylte a blue ribbon.

Poultry had 14 entries. Grant Fisher received three blue ribbons. Jillian Fischer received one purple and two blue ribbons. Garrison Heinz received one purple and seven blue ribbons.

Rabbit had 16 entries. Grant Fischer received a purple, blue and a white on his French Lops, a blue and purple on his Mini Satins, and two purples on his Polish. Jillian Fischer received two purples on her French Lops, three purples on her Mini Satins, and a purple and a blue on her Polish. Josie Sylte received two purples for her French Lops.

Swine had five entries. Chelsea Cordsen received two blue ribbons for her Commercial Market Barrows and a re ribbon for her Spot Market Barrow. Jacob Jung received a purple ribbon for his Commercial Market Barrow and a blue ribbon for his Commercial Market Barrow.
