October 31, 2018

The Region 2B high school girls' volleyball tournament got underway on Monday with a pair of play-in matches.

Leola-Frederick hosted Eureka-Bowdle in the eighth-seed vs. ninth-seed confrontation and the Titans won 3-1. Number-seven Highmore-Harrrold played host to tenth-seeded Sunshine Bible Academy and won 3-0.

The tourney continued on Tuesday at four sites in two parallel brackets. The 8-vs.-9 winner advanced to Faulkton to play top-seeded Faulkton Area and fourth-seeded Ipswich (18-11 entering the tourney) hosted number-five Potter County in the remaining match in the Faulkton-led bracket.

Tuesday's other bracket featured the 7-vs.-10 winner facing overall second-seeded Sully Buttes in Onida and number-three Herreid-Selby Area hosted number-six Edmunds Central.

These results weren't available as of our newspaper deadline. But they trimmed the entire 2B field down to four teams.

Two of the Tuesday advancers will clash in the top bracket on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the site of the higher-seeded team and the two opposite-bracket survivors will also square off at the home of the higher seed.

Both of Thursday's winning teams will qualify for the statewide Round of 16 on November 6. This elite field of 16 will be seeded statewide into eight different matches that evening, each hosted by the higher seed. Those eight winners will punch their tickets to the State B scheduled for Sioux Falls on November 15-17.
