IHS tracksters compete in Brookings, girls win meet

April 10, 2019

Last Monday was April Fools Day! But this was no April Fools joke at an indoor high school track and field meet hosted by SDSU in Brookings -- the Ipswich Lady Tigers indeed compiled a 77.875 to 62.333 team-title win over runnerup Sioux Falls Christian with Deubrook Area third at 55.

And the IHS Tiger boys finished seventh with 34 team points. (The male competition was won by Sioux Falls Christian 102 to 48 over the second-place team Milbank, which edged out third-place Warner by a mere point.)

The 16-event Scott Underwood Invitational at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex was well attended by over 30 teams with 1200 individual athletes from three different states. So Ipswich head coach Todd Thorson was understandably impressed by his teams' performances in Brookings.

"It was a great day for both squads," Thorson said. "We improved a lot on both sides." (This meet was scored out by Top Eight placements and the team standings compiled just like an outdoors meet, but indoor times and distances didn't count for state-qualifying purposes.)

Ipswich earned a 12:33.85 3,200-meter run win by Aleah Steger on the girls' side and the Lady Tigers' 4x400-meter relay team also finished first with a 4:23.51 clocking. Those runners were Tessa Kilber, Abby Grabowska, Bailey Hammrich and Taylor Maurer. Ipswich was second in the 4x100 meter-relay outcome at :53.48 with three of those same runners in a slightly different order —Hammrich to Maurer to Grabowska, who then initiated the final baton exchange to anchor Lily Gaston. And Kilber, Steger, Emily DeRaad and Ashley Ptacek combined for a runner-up clocking of 10:33.41 in the 4x800-meter baton event, as well.

Individually, Maurer and teammate Mckenzie Evans each added a second-place tie in the pole vault at 9-00.00 and Kamryn Heinz was also second in the shot put at 36-00.

Ipswich's top boys' finisher was Maxwell Geditz with a 6-05 second-place achievement in the high jump.
