Ipswich graduate and USD sophomore Macy Heinz crossed the finish line in 2:10.32 to win the college women’s 800-meter run during the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls this past weekend.

And a couple of current IHS Lady Tiger relay teams won their Class B high school division at that prestigious meet. That would be the 4x100 clocked at :51.82 (Bailey Hammrich, Taylor Maurer, Halle Heinz and anchor Lily Gaston) and the 4x200 in 1:50.50 ran by Bailey Hammrich, Taylor Maurer, Tessa Kilber and Lily Gaston.

The Lady Tigers furthermore placed fourth in the 4x400 at 4:16.85 (Tessa Kilber, Abby Grabowska, Bailey Hammrich and Taylor Maurer) and also obtained a fourth-place finish in the 4x800 at 10:18.61 (Tessa Kilber, Aleah Steger, Ashley Ptacek, and anchor Emily DeRaad). They added a sixth-place 4:31.96 sprint-medley clocking (Halle Heinz, Lily Gaston, Abby Grabowska and Tessa Kilber) to place in all five of their relay attempts. And the 4x100, 4x200, medley relay and 4x400 quartets were all brand new state-qualifiers. The Lady Tigers had previously qualified their 4x800 baton team, so all five girls’ relay quartets are headed for the State B right back in Sioux Falls on May 24-25.

And an IHS girl, Lily Gaston, got state-qualified in two new individual events, competing during an O’Gorman meet there, placing sixth in the long jump at 15-11.5 and eighth in the triple jump at 33-02, according to IHS coach Todd Thorson.

The Tiger boys’ top finish of the weekend was a second-place outcome in their version of the 4x400 (Ben Kulesa, Maxwell Geditz, William Kadlec and Riley Nehlich) and that team was clocked at 3:37.72. The boys’ 4x100 meter relay quartet was fourth at :45.46 (Ty Kadlec, William Kadlec, Matthew Hettich and Carson Simes) and their 4x200 meter baton team was also fourth at 1:35.25 (William Kadlec, Maxwell Geditz, Ben Kulesa and Carson Simes) and those were all new state-qualifications on the boys’ side. But they weren’t quite through yet! The boys’ medley relay team, comprised of Ty Kadlec, Matthew Hettich, Maxwell Geditz and Ben Kulesa, finished 13th in a fast field, but was still able to SQ with a 3:51.63 clocking.

And Maxwell Geditz achieved an eighth-place finish in the open high jump at 6-2.00, where he had previously qualified for state.

There were some additional IHS performers who turned in notable times or distances during the classic weekend, competing at either O’Gorman or Howard Wood or even both meets, including some thinclads who had already state qualified for a particular event

Ipswich was scheduled to host Tuesday’s LRC meet and the varsity will also host a small meet here on Friday, May 10. The Region 2B meet will be held on Thursday, May 16 in Gettysburg, yet one final opportunity to qualify for state with a first or second place finish or at the very least exceed a state-qualfying standard in a particular event.
