IHS Golfers have busy schedule

Ipswich attended two high school golf meets last week, starting with the Lake Region Conference high school golf invite in Aberdeen last Tuesday, where IHS came away with a boys' varsity team win, led by Luke Peterson's individual title. He carded an 80, five strokes better than runner-up Andrew Rohrbach of Aberdeen Christian.

There were four conference teams on the boys' side and the Tigers defeated second-place Faulkton Area by 14 strokes, 261 to 275. Leola was third among the boys with its 291 and Frederick fourth at 504.

Ethan Gilbert also finished strong for Ipswich with a third-place 87. The Tigers' third scorer was Chet Peterson, also in the top 10, placing seventh at 94. Matthew Jaenisch carded a 12th-place 102 for Ipswich to complete its day. There were a total of 16 boys in the varsity meet.

In the varsity girls' competition, there were only two teams eligible for team-scoring purposes, Faulkton Area and Ipswich. The Trojans topped the Lady Tigers 321 to 417, paced by the individual medalist Brooke Niederbaumer with a 99. Her teammate Sydney Campbell was second individually with her 104. Ipswich's Halie Feldman was next, finishing third at 115. Ipswich's Angeline Rye placed sixth at 130 and Tarynn Kleffman seventh at 172. There were eight girls in the varsity meet.

Ipswich closed out its varsity golf week with a trip to Eureka on Saturday. The Tiger boys placed second to Potter County in the team standings, 235 to 261. Six teams were eligible for the boys' standings. Ipswich was led by Gilbert's fourth with an 82 and Luke Peterson tied for sixth at 86. The next Tigers were Matthew Jaenisch and Chet Peterson, tying for ninth at 93. The individual winner that day was Grant Luikens of Potter County with a 76, followed by his own teammate Shad Sharp also at 76. There were 27 individual boys in the meet.

Halie Feldman was Ipswich's lone varsity girl at the meet and placed eighth among 20 golfers with her 102. Jayda Sawinsky of Selby Area was the medalist at 86 and Leah Gough of Aberdeen Central JV was next at 88. Selby Area also edged the AC JV in the team standings 272 to 314.

Ipswich was scheduled to return to Aberdeen on May 6 for a meet hosted by Aberdeen Christian.

At that meet the Tiger boys finished second only to James Valley Christian by two strokes, 268 to 270. Luke Peterson was fourth individually at 85, followed by Ethan Gilbert in sixth at 90. Chet Peterson also dented the Top Ten in tenth at 95. Matthew Jaenisch carded a 106 to round out Ipswich's effort. It was won by Sam Hansen of GPL with a 79, followed by Austin Boomsma of JVC with a 81.

The Lady Tigers entered two girls, led by Halle Feldman in fourth at 111, so weren't eligible for the team standings. Tarynn Kleffman added a 147 effort for Ipswich. The team winner was Faulkton over Miller 314 to 434 and the girls' medalist was Brooke Niederbaumer of Faulkton with a 102, which edged her teammate Taylor Machtemes by one stroke.

The IHS varsity will then attend a tourney in Huron on Thursday, May 9 and that very same day Ipswich will also host a JV/Middle School golf event at Split Rock. The pre-region is scheduled for May 13 in Huron and the region will be held on May 20 in Huron. But IHS coach Matt Pollock says that the Tigers might possibly try to set up a home meet sometime between May 13 and May 24, if that proves to be feasible.

The state golf meets will be hosted by Mitchell on June 3-4.
