Cardinals stop I/EC Tigers at home

Quarterback Ethan Gilbert (5) looks for a receiver under pressure from Cardinal players.

Ipswich/Edmunds Central dropped its first high school football decision of the 2019 campaign with a 41-6 non-conference loss to Deuel last Friday in Ipswich, as part of the EC homecoming festivities.

Deuel was led by Carter Hoffman with three rushing touchdowns and a receiving TD. He ended up with 282 yards rushing on 16 carries. (The team's powerful ground attack compiled 436 yards and probably didn't really need its additional 23-yard passing effort from Logan Stoltenburg.)

The Tiger numbers for the night included 61 rushing yards, led by Carson Gohl with 32 on 13 carries. Ethan Gilbert added a 148-yard passing evening on a 15-24-2 effort. In receiving, Eric Severson finished 3-53, Matthew Hettich 2-34, Kaden Hix 3-27 and Ty Kadlec, 2-24.

Defensively Ipswich/EC was led by Josh McQuarie with nine tackles, followed by Matthew Hettich with eight and Carter Heinz with eight, as well.

Ipswich/EC's lone score, that occuring in the third quarter,  was set up by a Cardinal fumble deep in its own territory. Luke Peterson was indeed able to get into the end zone. But the PAT play failed.

The visitors had scored six points in somewhat of a defensive first quarter by both teams. Deuel then went into halftime with a 21-0 lead. The Cardinals also matched I/EC's six points in the third quarter and strung together a pair of insurance touchdown plays in the final quarter.

Ipswich/Edmunds Central dropped to 2-1 on the year and will travel to Langford on Friday for a key Lake Region Conference encounter in a battle of the Big Cats - the Tigers vs. Lions.
