Ipswich swept both the girls and boys varsity team titles at a cross country invite hosted by Potter County last Saturday. And that was the initial opportunity this season for them to both be eligible for their respective team titles!

"It was the first time putting varsity together (as teams) and I thought we ran really good," said Coach Todd Thorson. "It was wet and windy, but everyone that ran today showed up focused and ready to compete. That includes JV and middle-school as well."

Helped by Tessa Kilber's first-place 19:38.67 win of the girls' varsity race, the Lady Tigers were able to outscore runner-up Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 10 to 16. (The individual girls' runner-up was Daci Lends His Horse of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.) Emily DeRaad claimed a fifth-place finish for Ipswich in 21:16.95 and Ashley Ptacek also landed in the Top 10 in ninth among 21 runners in 22:25.18.

On the boys' side, there were 40 runners, led by Dylan Mollman of McIntosh in 16:41.47, followed by Andrew Sorenson of Faulkton Area in 17:11.45. Ipswich bettered Timber Lake 16 to 25 for the boys' team title, led by Maxwell Geditz in fourth at 17:53.84. Also credit Taylor Thorson with a seventh-place effort of 18:23.64 and Turner Thorson in ninth at 18:32.92. Evan Onken was 16th in 19:18.61, followed by Dylan Wald, 23rd in 20:17.93.

The girls' JV effort also included four Ipswich finishers among the 18. Kaylin Onken was third in 17:44.39 and Sommer DeRaad fourth in 17:45.21. Next was Chloe Jager, ninth in 19:50.88 and Makala DeRaad was 13th in 21:47.62. Meanwhile, the boys' junior varsity featured Xavier Kadlec, eighth among 20 runners, clocked at 16:47.06.

How about those middle-school girls? Madisyn Gellhaus was third at 14:07.70, followed closely by Gabrielle Wald fourth in 14:21.90 and Gracyn Kadlec fifth at 14:35.89. Ava Davis compiled a ninth-place 15:14.34 clocking and Natalie Crissman completed the Ipswich effort in 13th at 16:58.50.

Ipswich will send its cross country teams to Miller on September 30.
