In volleyball Ipswich Tigers stop Mobridge Tigers

October 16, 2019

The Ipswich volleyball team certainly feels at home in the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers' gym. They will have played five matches there this year, almost as many as their own gym, according to coach Trent Osborne.

They've indeed already played four matches there, winning all of them, the most recent occurring on Monday evening, when the Ipswich Lady Tigers swept their Mobridge-Pollock counterparts 3-0. They won their opening set 25-18 and then staved off the home team 27-25 in a hard-fought second set. Ipswich closed out the match with a much easier 25-19 victory.

Ipswich was shaded by M-P 102-83 in total hits, but topped the hosts 34 to 20 in kills. Ipswich was led by Halle Heinz 10-12 at the net with nine kills and Avery Sylte was next at 29-36,8.

Ipswich dished out 86 sets including 28 assists and Heinz led this department with a 40-40, 12-assist evening. Bailey Pitz added a 39-39,14 effort there. The hosts were 94-94 in setting with 17 assists.

Ipswich's serving effort was led by Lindsey Grabowska, 18-20 with five aces. Overall Ipswich was 83 of 94 with 14 aces. "We played great defense last night and were able to win the Serve/Pass battle," Osborne explained. "When we are able to do those two things, we put ourselves in contention to win any match. Fourteen aces to 0 aces is a pretty good night. That is how you win that Serve/Pass battle."

Defensively Ipswich indeed came up with 101 digs, led by Chesney Olivier with 24 of them and Heinz, 20. (The host Tigers recorded 78 digs.)

The non-conference win improved Ipswich's record to 15-5 and the team will be back in action on Thursday in the friendly confines of their own Tiger Den against Hitchcock-Tulare, another non-league affair. They will play two more home games -- on October 25 vs. Leola/Frederick in LRC action and on October 28 vs. Herreid/Selby Area.

That fifth and final match in Mobridge, Osborne says, will be an added October 29 clash with Faith. This match was recently added to Ipswich's schedule to help make up for some lost matches due to last Saturday's weather-related cancellation of a Potter County Invitational.
