Ipswich's State B cross country results in Huron last Saturday produced two individual Lady Tigers who medaled in the Top 25 and one Tiger boy achieving that feat in Huron. Additionally the Lady Tigers claimed sixth place in their team standings there Saturday.

Madison Fairley of Gayville-Volin captured the State B girls' individual championship with her outstanding 19:14.17 clocking and Jolie Dugan of Jones County was second in 19:59.67.

Ipswich's first Top 25 medalist was number eight IHS senior Tessa Kilber (last week's Aberdeen American News Athlete of the Week) with her 20:30.58 outcome and next with that second IHS individual medal was number-25 Ashlinn Hartwell in 21:35.39. Meanwhile Ipswich's third individual scorer in 53rd was Summer DeRaad (22:23.24). Next was number 60 Emily DeRaad in 22:34.09, followed by the 95th-place runner among 120 contestants Ashley Ptacek in 23:30.24.

And those top six girls' team placers were Dakota Hills winning it all with 32 points, followed closely by Wall with 34, then Burke with 49 and Hanson with 49, edging number five Newell's 50. Then came Ipswich with a total of 57 girls' team points.

Meanwhile, Ipswich's lone Top 25 boys' finisher medaling in 19th-place clocked at 18:08.43 was Taylor Thorson, followed by Turner Thorson in 33rd at 18:47.86.

Cody Larson of Warner was again the State B boys' champion with his 16:32.77 effort, edging the number-two runner Jonathan Burkhalter of Bison clocked at 16:45.39. There was a total of 123 individual boys qualifying for the race.

Those Top Six boys team finishers were: number one Burke with 37 team points and the runner-up team representing our region was Timber Lake at 45, then Platte-Geddes 47, Newell 53, Freeman Academy/Marion 55 and Faulkton Area (also from our region) with 63.

Ipswich hosted a welcoming for the cross country contingent on Sunday evening in the school theater and season awards ceremony. The top MVP award went to Kilber for obvious reasons and Coach Thorson compared her with all the past IHS Lady Tiger greats. The boys had co-MVP's after the votes were counted - Maxwell Geditz, a senior (despite missing the post-season due to a sinus infection) and sophomore Taylor Thorson.

Coach Thorson thanked everybody for attending the program especially the IHS parents.

"What a season and what a great group of individuals," he said. "The future is bright, too."
