Region 2B play underway in Ipswich

November 6, 2019

It’s that time of year — girls post-season volleyball time! And when the Region 2B girls’ high school volleyball seeding points were counted (and more than likely recounted) Ipswich narrowly trailed top-seeded Faulkton Area as the overall second seed, placing the Lady Tigers in the hunt for one of the two Region 2B bracket championships.

The Lady Tigers were scheduled to host seventh-seeded North Central on Tuesday evening with those results not known by our newspaper deadline. (Faulkton was all set to host the eight-vs-nine Monday play-in advancer, either Sunshine Bible Academy or Lower Brule.)

The winners of each of the Tuesday Region 2B bracket semi-finals will each secure a berth in a bracket championship match at the home of the higher-seed at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7. (The 2 vs. 7 winner will play either Highmore-Harrold or Sully Buttes.)

Thursday’s pair of 2B winners will join 14 other state-wide regional bracket champions to face an opponent determined by a statewide re-seeding of the 16 contenders into eight SoDak 16 matches on Nov. 12. Those winners will each advance to the State B in Rapid City later this month.

The Lady Tigers dropped a five-set match to Faith in Mobridge last Tuesday that closed out their regular season slate at 18-6.

The West River power edged the Lady Tigers 15-8 in the tiebreaker. Ipswich also lost the first set 25-20, but bounced back for a 25-23 win of set two and a 25-20 victory in the third set. But Faith won the number four set 25-19 to force the OT.

Ipswich was 96-101 in serving with six aces. Credit Chesney Olivier with a 20-20 3-ace night, followed by Tarynn Kleffman 16-17, 2.

Ipswich went 135-153 at the net with 53 kills, led by Avery Sylte, 51-59 with 17 kills. Halle Heinz was next at 19-23 with 11 kills and Katie Bierman, 20-23, 5.

Ipswich had 146 sets with 43 assists, led by Heinz 62-65, 17 and Bailey Pitz 53-53, 15.

Ipswich had 153 digs, led by Lindsey Grabowska with 34 and Heinz with 33. In blocking Ipswich was led by Paige Mehlberg with three of her team’s five solos. She also added one assist.

AFTER TUESDAY NIGHT PLAY

The Lady Tigers were the winners Tuesday night, defeating the North Central Thunder team 3-0. Ipswich will play Sully Buttes on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
