Girls get win at home
January 1, 2020
Ipswich gradually pulled away from Webster Area for a 61-50 non-conference girls' high school basketball win during a Saturday, Dec. 21 girls/boys doubleheader in the Tiger Den.
Webster had led 14-13 after a back-and-forth opening-quarter started by an early 4-0 Bearcats' edge.
But Ipswich responded with a 17-12 second-quarter scoring cushion propelled by a Bailey Pitz quarter-opening trey to lead 30-26 at intermission. Ipswich had trailed 26-25 quite late in that stanza, though. But that's when the Tigers strung together a five-point mini-run to close out the half, leading 30-26. (That run consisted of a Tessa Kilber trey and two Halie Feldman free throws.)
Ipswich then narrowly edged its visitors 17-16 in the third stanza of action for a 47-42 edge, entering the final quarter. A Halle Heinz trey then launched a 15-9 fourth-quarter IHS scoring edge that sealed the verdict. And Heinz and Kilber each hit a pair of free throws to push Ipswich into a 62-49 advantage. The Bearcats would salvage a final-quarter buzzer-beating basket, but it was too little, too late.
Heinz finished with 21 points, featuring a trio of treys. But Kilber was a welcomed additional double-figure scorer for the Tigers with 13 points including a pair of treys. And Katie Bierman contributed 12 points to become Ipswich's third player to reach Saturday's double-figure scoring plateau. Pitz netted two treys for her six points and Hailey Bierman tallied three points. Kate Geditz completed the scoring ledger with a free throw.
Webster responded with Jaiden Bauer's game-high 22 points and one other Bearcat reached double-figures that day, Cara Shoemaker with 11 points.
Ipswich netted 23 baskets that included its treys and added eight free throws.
Ipswich edged its visitors 34-33 on the boards, led by Heinz with eight rebounds and Kilber with five. Ipswich committed four fewer turnovers than Webster's 15. Kilber had five steals and Heinz, three.
