Lady Tigers get overtime win over Wildcats

January 22, 2020

Records can be deceiving, especially when two traditional Lake Region Conference high school basketball rivals lock horns. That was the scenario last Thursday in Mellette, where the Ipswich Tiger girls' basketball team escaped with a 51-47 overtime victory over the home-court Wildcats.

It was that close! The score was tied six times, including that all-important tie at the end of regulation and the lead also changed hands six times. And you might suspect this confrontation just might require a little more time to sort things out. Ipswich would indeed edge its hosts 9-8 in the final quarter to force the OT. Ipswich had led 11-8 after a quarter and also acquired a 24-15 halftime edge, which would prove to be the Tigers' largest lead of the game. That's because the hosts outscored their visitors 21-11 in the third quarter for a 36-35 edge of their own with a quarter to play and it was anybody's game from then on.

Fortunately, though, Ipswich would indeed edge Northwestern 9-8 in the final stanza to force that OT. And the Tigers went to who else but Hallie Heinz down the stretch, their bread and butter scorer when the going got tough! "Halle hit a jump shot to make it 44-44," Coach Brian Hogie explained. "They missed and we had a shot, but missed the win in regulation."

But Ipswich then outscored its hosts 7-3 in the OT for an eventual two-possession win. "In overtime Halle was 3-4 from the FT line and Hailey Bierman and Katie Bierman each had a bucket," Hogie added.

Heinz would become the game's leading scorer with 29 points, including both of Ipswich's treys. From there, Tiger scoring tapered off to eight points from Hailey Bierman and six points from Katie Bierman, each including one of those timely OT baskets. Tessa Kilber was next with four points and Chesney Olivier and Lindsey Grabowska added two points each.

Northwestern countered with a balanced scoring attack. Madalyn Groft had 14 points and Hailey Boekelheide 13 points, followed by Hannah Schentzel with 10 points. Miranda Thorson chipped in with six points and Cassidy Frericks and Alexi Rahm scored two points apiece.

Ipswich included 20 floor shots in its attack that featured that pair of treys. The Tigers were then 9-15 at the charity stripe. The hosts connected on 17 floor shots including two treys themselves and added 11 free throws, as well.

Ipswich utilized 43 rebounds, led by Heinz with eight and Kilber, Olivier and Hailey Bierman with five each. Northwestern pulled down 54. Each team had 15 turnovers and Ipswich offset its own miscues with 11 steals led by who else, Heinz, with six.

Ipswich was scheduled to venture over to Groton on Tuesday, Jan. 21 and will next host Faulkton Area in a key conference and regional girls/boys doubleheader on January 23 in the Tiger Den. The girls will then also co-host along with the Tiger boys James Valley Christian on January 25. The girls JV game will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the boys JV. Then the girls varsity team will take the floor at about 3:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 5 p.m.
