Fiddlin' Around

February 26, 2020

March, March, March, there are so many things unique to the month, so it's a good thing it has 31 days instead of 30. And it got a late start this year due to there being a February 29.

First of all, weather-wise, will March come in like a Lamb? That might very possibly be true this year. And as the old prediction goes, will it then go out leading us into April like a Lion? That's probably a hard question to answer at this point in time, even though longer term forecasts do seem to be quite a bit more accurate than they used to be, thanks to the use of sophisticated computer modeling tools.

Then there are the Ides of March. I had forgotten what they are, so had to refresh my memory. It was a day in the Roman calendar that corresponds to our March 15. The Ides of March—March 15— apparently initially marked the first full moon of a new year. So you can see that it was originally based on a certain phase of the moon, but it has sometimes been given somewhat of an unlucky negative connotation. But that was not necessarily always true and even if it were to be the case, it could certainly be overcome by the Luck of the Irish two days later on Saint Patrick's Day.

And there's all sorts of basketball teams that will still be playing at that point in the season and could use some luck — from kids basketball tournaments right on up to the NBA and everywhere in between. And in close basketball games that go right down to the last possession, you could really use a little luck of the Irish on and around St. Patrick's Day (March 17).

There are probably some other March events or activities that I haven't even thought of, but I'm sure that you guys probably could.
