Fiddlin' Around

Congratulations to EC seventh grader Theodore Haerter of Hosmer for being able to advance into the next level of the National Geographic GeoBee South Dakota State Competition Semifinals and good luck on March 27, 2020 at the contest scheduled for Northern State University campus in Aberdeen. (The state champions will advance to the 2020 national championship May 18-21 at the National Geographic head- quarters in Washington, D.C.)

What do you think these students should know? Well, here are some sample questions you might find interesting.

• Which state is located west of Lake Huron -- Minnesota or Vermont? (That one should be fairly easy around here, obvioiusly Minnesota.)

• Known for the tree nuts resembling deer eyes, which midwestern state is called the Buckeye State --California or Ohio? (Ohio)

• Which country does not border the Atlantic Ocean -- Moldova, Angola or Ireland? (Moldova)

• The Matterhorn is an iconic peak in the Alps on the border between Switzerland and what other country? (Italy)

• Once the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, Tacoma is a major port and industrial city in which northwestern state? (Washington)

• Government designated preserves have helped protect giant tortoises in the Seychelles, a country made up of over 100 islands located north of Madagascar in what ocean? (Indian Ocean)

• And here's one more, now that you have those brain cells all warmed up! Host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, Sarajevo is the most populous city in which European country that was once a part of Yugoslavia? (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
