I/EC gridders get win #2 over Northwestern on the road

September 2, 2020

Ipswich/Edmunds Central scored in every quarter on the way to a 42-0 LRC high school football win over Northwestern last Friday in Mellette.

The hosts weren’t doing themselves any favors with some costly turnovers and 10 sacks and the Tigers were able to attain a 16-0 first quarter lead. They led 28-0 at intermission. The Tigers tacked on a third-quarter insurance TD and two more in the final stanza to assure the outcome.

Carson Gohl led I/EC in scoring with three touchdowns and one conversion run for 20 team points. Matt Hettich, Luke Peterson and Josh McQuarie each scored an additional TD. Peterson added a conversion carry. Kaden Hix completed the I/EC ledger with a conversion run.

The team rolled up 264 yards rushing on 35 attempts, led by Gohl with exactly 100 yards on 11 carries. Luke Peterson was next with 25 yards. In the air Ian Beyers was a 27-yard passer on four completions in 13 tries and one touchdown. McQuarie’s TD grab was indeed one of his two catches that totalled 22 yards, Hix also caught two passes for five yards.

Defensively, I/EC got 54 tackles, led by McQuarie with eight and Carter Geditz with seven.

I/EC, now 2-0, travels to Clear Lake to face Deuel on Friday. Deuel narrowly dropped its opener 34-28 to Hamlin last Friday. But don’t let that deceive you. Coach Hogie says, “Deuel will be a big test for us on Friday. They have one of the best running backs in nine-man football. We need to contain him the best we can.”

In the meantime Ipswich/EC certainly did what it needed to do on both sides of the football at Mellette.
