Homecoming win for I/EC gridders

October 7, 2020

Tiger Luke Peterson (24) runs with the ball in the Ipswich/Edmunds Central Homecoming win in Ipswich on Oct. 2. Josh McQuarie (30) blocks for Peterson.

They found a last-minute opponent to replace Faulkton for the Ipswich and Edmunds Central homecoming football game last Friday in Ipswich. It turned out to be Watertown-based Great Plains Lutheran, who would be seeking their initial victory of the season.

But the Panthers went away empty-handed once again as the Tiger D pitched its second shut out (44-0) and improved to 5-1.

GPL fumbled their kick return to start out the night and Trevor Beyers grabbed the football at the enemy 27. Six plays later Luke Peterson delivered a 4-yard TD run and Ian Beyers passed to Carter Geditz for the two-point conversion. As previously indicated those 8-points would really be all the Tigers would need.

The defense (Eric Severson) blocked a punt, meaning more great field position inside the redzone at the 18. And Peterson would also cap that short drive with another TD run and a Josh McQuarie run made it 16-0.

Later in the quarter the Tiger D held on downs and took over possession at their 43-yard line. A few plays later Carson Gohl scampered into pay dirt and I. Beyers passed to Severson for the PATs and a 24-0 edge with 3:57 left in the opening stanza.

A little later Tyler Hettich got a 24-yard TD run for a 30-0 lead. Severson capped another drive with a short TD run for a 36-0 edge with 8:12 left in the half. And that's where things stood at the half.

Ipswich/EC fumbled deep in enemy territory but after a promising Panther drive I/EC held on downs at their 37. McQuarie then capped that drive with a TD run of 11 yards and I. Beyers passed to Severson for a 2-point conversion for the eventual 44-0 margin.

Ipswich/EC rolled up 377 total yards, 327 rushing and 50 passing.

I. Beyers was 6-13 through the air for all 50-yards and McQuarie the top receiver with 33 yards on 2 catches. Next was Carter Geditz with two grabs for 11 yards.

The leading rusher was Gohl with 146 yards on 9 carries. Next was Tyler Hettich with 47.

The team had 43 solo tackles and 16 assists with a balanced effort led by Tyler Hettich with seven solo efforts and two assists. They came away with five sacks led by Gohl's three.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Selby on Friday to play Herreid/Selby Area.
