Wolverines stop I/EC Tigers on the road

October 14, 2020

A pair of high school football once-beatens did battle last Friday in Selby on a beautiful evening for football. And the Herreid/Selby Wolverines topped the Ipswich/Edmunds Central Tigers by a 34-16 verdict. That improved the hosts' season record to 6-1, while the Tigers dropped to 5-2.

Trailing 20-8 at the halftime break, Ipswich/Edmunds Central methodically put together a scoring drive that had started on their own 27. They capped the drive with a short carry by quarterback Ian Beyers. He also passed to Eric Severson for the PATs, reducing their deficit to 20-16, down by one possession. And the I/EC situation looked even more promising at that juncture of the game, when the hosts fumbled the I/EC kick-off near their own 40. But their defense rose to the occasion and held on downs at their own 32.

And that would actually prove to be the Tigers' last scoring opportunity, as the hosts would add a pair of insurance touchdowns. Leading 26-16 after a TD drive, their D came up with an interception on a Tiger fake punt play, which gave them another decent opportunity near midfield. And they needed just five plays to score a TD from 28 yards out plus their successful 2-point conversion attempt to go ahead by the final margin.

The hosts had also opened scoring with a lengthy opening drive, beginning at their own 27. But the PAT play failed. And what happened next? You guessed it, a 85-yard kick return to pay dirt from Tyler Hettich, that electrified the Tiger fans in attendance that evening. And Ian Beyers found Josh McQuarie for the two-point conversion and a brief 8-6 Tigers' lead.

A fumble recovery led to the hosts' next scoring drive, a very short one to say the least, beginning at the Tigers' nine yard-line. A Trey Hettick pass capped that drive and he also passed for two more points on the Wolverine scoreboard for a 14-8 edge. Then a little later in the game they started possession at their own 10. And it would prove to be an impressive and long drive that resulted in a TD from 10 yards out. But the PAT play failed. A timely interception late in the half after an awesome Tiger drive didn't hurt the Wolverine cause either.

Ian Beyers finished 6-22-4 for 37 aerial yards. The team added 83 rushing yards, led by Carson Gohl with 43, followed by Luke Peterson with 22 and Ian Beyers, 18. Carter Geditz caught a pass for 18 yards. Mathew Jaenisch had two grabs for 12 yards and McQuarie and Severson one catch each for 3 yards, followed by Peterson one catch for a yard.

Defensively the team made 36 solo tackles and 42 assisted for a total of 78. Peterson led with 16 total tackles (9 solos and 7 assisted). Zach Geditz was also in double figures with 4 solos and 6 assists, followed by McQuarie with 4 solos and 5 assists. Carter Geditz and Zach Geditz each had a sack and Ty Kadlec an interception.

The Tigers will finish the regular season at home hosting Sully Buttes on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. The first-round playoffs begin Oct. 22.
