I/EC gridders stop Chargers in Ipswich

October 21, 2020

Carson Gohl (8) runs with the football while passing by several Chargers on his way to the end zone.

Stopping Sully Buttes 48-8 in a non-conference high school football clash last Friday in Ipswich, the Ipswich/Edmunds Central Tigers improved their season record to 6-2 and secured a home-field location in Ipswich for the first round of the 9A high school football playoffs, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22. That was a big sentence but it was an even bigger win.

The Tigers will host Britton-Hecla, 4-4, a team that had handled Ipswich/EC fairly easily a year ago in the opening round of the 9A play-offs in Britton. So the Tigers are hoping to be in the hunt this year starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday. "It should be a good game," says coach Brian Hogie. "Both teams match up well."

Meanwhile, the Ipswich/EC D nearly had its fourth shut-out, but allowed Sully Buttes a late TD to get on the scoreboard at all and the Chargers added a two-point conversion play.

Both teams had tested each others defense in the early-going, resulting in some punts. But Ipswich/EC ignited its offense with a 69-yard TD run from Carson Gohl and tacked on the two-point conversion run from Ian Beyers with 4:36 left in the opening quarter. Then Ipswich/EC's D provided a score with a 40-yard interception run back by Matt Hettich. Then Ian Beyers passed to Eric Severson for the PATs and that 16-0 lead with 2:39 left in the opening quarter. It would be more than enough to get the job done especially when the Tigers took over on downs at their own 38. The Tigers capped that drive with an Ian Beyers to Matt Hettich 8-yard TD aerial and a conversion pass from Ian Beyers to Ty Kadlec for a 24-0 lead. A little later in the half the Ian Beyers to Kadlec connection worked again for a 29-yard touchdown followed by another successful conversion play that would give the Tigers a 32-0 lead going into halftime (a pass from I. Beyers to Matt Jaenisch).

Ipswich/EC started the second half with the football and that drive would end with an Ian Beyers touchdown run from deep in the red zone. The Ipswich/EC QB again found Severson for the pair of conversion points and a 40-0 lead. Luke Peterson then capped a fourth-quarter drive from 14 yards out and yet another two-point conversion pass from Ian Beyers to Jaenisch gave the Tigers their 48-0 lead.

The team earned 293 rushing yards on 41 carries, led by Gohl with 143 yards. Luke Peterson added 86 rushing yards and Trevor Heinz had 25. Ian Beyers was also in double figures with 17. The Tigers were 9 of 11 through the air for 108 more yards, all from Ian Beyers. Kadlec had three catches for 65 yards followed by Matt Hettich with 31 yards on two catches.

The Tigers produced 28 solo tackles and 32 assisted, led by Luke Peterson with five of each. Jaenisch was next with two solos and five assists.
