Finally, election day is here

October 28, 2020

The 2020 General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 3 in all the voting precincts in Edmunds County. The election polls will be open from seven a.m. to seven p.m.

Many county voters have already filled out their ballot. Edmunds County Auditor Keith Schurr said, “We are at 600 absentees today (Oct. 27), of 2,670 registered voters in the county.” He said the previous high was 476 absentee ballots in the 2004 General Election.

There are no Edmunds County races on this year’s ballot. Two candidates are vying for the lone District 23 Senator seat — Bryan Breitling and CJ Abernathey. Spencer Gosch and Charlie Hoffman are both running for District 23 Representative. Two will be elected.

South Dakota voters will also select a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative. Incumbent Senator Mike Rounds is facing Dan Ahlers. Incumbent Rep. Dusty Johnson is facing Randy “Uriah” Luallin.

Candidates for Public Utilities Commissioner are the incumbent Gary Hanson, Devin Saxon and Remi W.B. Bald Eagle. One will be elected.

Of course, the ballot also features the decision to elect Presidential Electors. On the ballot are Trump and Pence Electors, Jorgensen and Cohen Electors and Biden and Harris Electors.

The back side of your ballot features two Constitutional Amendments and an Initiated Measure.

• Constitutional Amendment A would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana.

• Constitutional Amendment B would authorize the Legislature to allow sports wagering in Deadwood.

• Initiated Measure 26 would legalize marijuana for medical use.

Many local residents have chosen to vote using an absentee ballot.
