Berniece Mohr of Hosmer had a booth at the Highway of Hope Holiday Vendor & Craft Fair in Ipswich last Saturday.

Many of us have books that were read and are now collecting dust in our homes. Berniece Mohr of Hosmer has been turning hardcover books into intricate pieces of art.

Berniece's Bookfolding has booths at area craft and vendor shows. She recently had a table with holiday pieces at the Highway of Hope Holiday Vendor and Craft Show in Ipswich.

She turns hardcover books into pieces of art using folding and cutting each page of the book.

The book has to be at least 500 pages, Berniece said. She looks for good deals at second-hand stores.

She started the art five years ago, she said. Berniece said she was inspirted to try it when she saw a friends folded Readers Digest that become a Christmas tree. Then she investigated what could be done. Now she gets patterns from England for the intricate creations. The design of each page is on a graph with each fold and snip.

Berniece said it takes a few days to complete a project. When she is busy, a few days off to let her hands recuperate are welcome.

Christmas is a busy time with a variety of designs, but there are designs for all times.

For many years Berniece used scissors to cut material for the work she did with upholstery. Now she says she is a "dappler," trying a variety of craft projects including quilting and sewing.
