Tigers 1-1 in basketball road trip to Huron on Saturday

The Tigers split hoops trip to James Valley Christian in Huron.

Ipswich went 1-1 in a girls/boys basketball doubleheader versus JVC last Saturday.

Boys first in this case because the Tigers boys indeed come away with a 48-34 win! But the Lady Tigers were edged by a single point, 43-42. And their two losses at this point in time were by a combined total of three points.

Meanwhile the boys were able to jump out to a 14-9 first quarter edge and ended the half with a 22-17 edge. The third quarter then belonged to Ipswich 16-13, followed by a decisive Tiger edge, 10-4, in the final stanza.

The Tigers were led by Taylor Thorson’s game-high 16 points. He was followed by Eric Severson with eight points. Josh McQuarie totaled seven points, as did Ty Kadlec. Matt Jaenisch scored four points that included a trey and Matt Hettich was next with a trey for his three points. Carson Gohl contributed a basket and Jordan Nierman a free-throw.

The Tigers made 17 floor shots and they included those two treys. They were 12-25 in free throws.

The hosts countered with a pair of double-figure scorers — Landon Wager and Landon Wallman with 13 point apiece. Only three more JVC players would score.

They were 12-42 in floor shots that featured six treys. They went 4-9 in free throw tries.

Ipswich utilized a 46-37 rebounding edge, led by McQuarie with 10 and Thorson with seven.

The Tigers sustained 14 turnovers and JVC, 22. Ipswich’s defenders came up with 12 steals, paced by McQuarie with five thefts.

At that point in their schedule the Tiger boys were 8-3 with the non-conference win. They were scheduled to host a girls/boys twinbill with Warner on Jan. 26. Then on Friday, Jan. 29 they will host Herreid/Selby Area in a girls/boys twinbill here. On Saturday, Jan. 30 just the boys go to Highmore-Harrold with the first game set for 1:30 p.m. in Highmore.

The girls lost a heart-breaker 43-42 in Huron. What happened was that JVC out-scored Ipswich 15-11 in the final stanza.

Ipswich had opened with a 16-9 first quarter scoring edge, but the hosts won the second quarter 13-9 cutting the IHS lead to three points at intermission (25-22). And the third quarter resulted in a 6-6 tie, settling nothing just yet. It was definitely a close game. The score was tied three times with 15 lead changes.

The Vikings were led by Brenna Held with 17 points and Karilyn Wieting added 12 points with four other players in their scorebook.

Ipswich obtained 10 points from Halle Heinz. But Katie Bierman added eight points and and so did Halie Feldman. Next was Hailey Bierman, who claimed five points including a trey. Lindsey Grabowska and Chesney Olivier each scored four points. Bailey Pitz completed their scoring effort with a trey.

Ipswich shot 17-49 from the floor featuring those two treys and added a 6-10 day at the free-throw line. The JVC scorers answered with 19 baskets that also included two treys. They were just 3-7 at the charity stripe.

Ipswich got 30 rebounds led by Hailey Bierman with five and Heinz with four. The Vikings claimed 41 boards. Ipswich had 14 turnovers; JVC, 14, as well. Ipswich totaled nine steals; JVC, six.

As well as the doubleheaders already mentioned, the girls will host Northwestern on Feb. 1 and play in Leola on Feb. 2 versus Leola/Frederick Area.
