Monarchs stop Tigers on the road in Warner

January 12, 2022

Warner captured a 52-37 girls' high school varsity LRC victory over Ipswich last Thursday, Jan. 6 in Warner.

Ipswich and the hosts would trade blows in the early going and the Tigers would grab a 12-10 lead late in the opening quarter, thanks to a Katie Bierman basket. But the Monarchs answered with a five-point run to close out the opening quarter, starting with a deuce and then three accurate free throws created by a Tiger foul at the buzzer. And they would extend their second-quarter advantage with eight straight points to go ahead 23-15. That momentum was finally interrupted by a Bierman trey.

The hosts would then lead 31-21 at intermission and gradually increased their cushion to 44-27 before Quincy Olivier's basket with a quarter to play. And the Monarchs were then able to comfortably coast to their final 15-point win, despite five late points from who else, yes, Bierman with a trey and a basket from inside the arc.

She became the game-high scorer with 20 points that included a trio of three-balls. Olivier also got into double-figures with exactly 10 points. Next was Kaylin Onken with four points, followed by Ashlyn Weig with three points.

The Monarchs were led by Kyra Marcuson with 13 points and Peyton Fisher with 12 points, while six more Warner players entered their score book.

They totaled 22 baskets, all from within the trey arc and were 8-14 in free throw opportunities. Ipswich countered with 14 made field goals that featured those three treys by Bierman. And the Tigers added six free throws in 10 attempts.

Ipswich sustained 18 turnovers; Warner, only eight, all of which were Tiger steals, led by Olivier with three thefts. Rebounds were quite comparable with Ipswich grabbing 28 rebounds and Warner, 31. Ipswich was led by Bierman's four. She also distributed six of Ipswich's 13 assists.

Ipswich was to next have a homecourt girls make-up game hosting another LRC opponent, Langford Area on January 10. The girls play Northwestern there on Jan. 13. The Tiger girls and boys will then face North Central on January 18 in Roscoe.
