January 19, 2022

The Ipswich girls' basketball team lost a 49-35 Lake Region Conference verdict at Northwestern on January 13. What happened was that the host team would outscore Ipswich 18-8 in the decisive final quarter.

The hosts had also gotten off to an impressive 15-6 first-quarter lead and then led 21-16 at intermission. But Ipswich would slightly shrink its deficit to four point, 31 to 27, with that crucial quarter remaining to be played.

The Wildcats were led by Adrianna Ratigan's 19 points, while Ella Haven would include 11 points and she included a trey. Teryn Sparling almost climbed the double-figure scoring plateau with her nine points that were complements of a trio of treys. Faith Larson was next with seven points featuring her team's remaining three-ball and Jessica Boekelheide added three points.

Ipswich utilized a game-high scoring leader in the person of Katie Bierman who would tally 26 points that included a trey. (She also contributed six of Ipswich' 13 steals.) Next in scoring were Quincy Olivier with five points, Sommer DeRaad with a trey for three points and Kaylin Onken a free throw. Ashlyn Weig added four of her team's five assists.

The Wildcats shot 19-48 from the floor that included five accurate treys and were 6-9 in free throws. Ipswich responded with 14 baskets in 38 attempts which included its pair of treys and added a 5-12 free throw evening.

The Wildcats grabbed 33 rebounds, led by Boekelheide's eight boards; Ipswich, 27 rebounds, paced by Bierman's five.

The Wildcats indeed incurred 13 Tiger steals which would directly account for 13 of the Wildcats’ miscues, leaving the rest of their turnovers as unforced mistakes. Northwestern, meanwhile, came away with no fewer that 11 thefts.

The Tiger girls were to join their boys' counterparts in Roscoe on January 18 for a girls/boys twinbill. There will also be a girls/boys doubleheader in Ipswich vs. Faulkton on January 20 and another Tiger Den twinbill clash two nights later vs. James Valley Christian.
