Ipswich girls basketball fans were in high spirits in the James Valley Christian School gym in Huron on Feb. 28, 2019.
An old adage goes something like this "Good things will come for those who wait" and that has certainly been true for the Ipswich High School girls' basketball program. There's been more than one Lady Tiger team with quality personnel and coaches down through the years that didn't quite make it all the way and that includes last year's team that fell one win short of a trip to the B.
The last time an IHS girls' hoops team had qualified for a state tournament bid of any kind was exactly 30 years ago during the1988-89 school year, when Ipswich was Class A and girls' basketball was an autumn sport.
So Ipswich will carry a 18-3 girls' basketball mark into the State B tourney in Huron on March 7,8,9. The Lady Tigers indeed earned that long-sought trip to a state tourney with a SoDak 16 victory over Bridgewater-Emery by a 51-40 margin last Thursday at the James Valley Christian Gym in Huron.

The Lady Tigers will indeed be in the evening bracket on Thursday as the sixth-seed team going up against third-seeded Corsica-Stickney (21-2) at approximately 7:45 p.m. (The Jaguars' two regular-season losses were to top-seeded Ethan and a split with Avon.) Ipswich's three losses were all to Lake Region Conference teams – Langford Area, Faulkton Area and Warner Area. That game will be immediately preceded by number-2 De Smet at 21-1 versus seventh-seeded White River, 18-4, tipping off at 6 p.m. (And speaking of the LRC and Warner, the Monarchs will be the tourney's fourth-seeded team at 21-2 versus number-five Freeman (19-4) at approximately 1:45 p.m. in the afternoon bracket. The tourney opens at noon Thursday with undefeated and top-seeded Ethan (22-0) vs. Waverly-South Shore, 15-7 (a team that Ipswich had narrowly defeated during the regular-season).
The Lake Region Conference has indeed produced two teams for the girls' B this year and had Faulkton Area not been pitted against Warner in the SoDak 16, won by Warner last Thursday also at played at JVC, there could've been three LRC teams in the event. "The LRC is a great conference," says IHS coach Brian Hogie. "We are constantly represented in all state tournaments." And now that includes his very own team!
