County 4-Hers earn ribbons and honors at State Fair

Edmunds County 4-H Members exhibited over 100 static exhibits at the 2019 South Dakota State Fair in Huron last week. Several members also participated in the Special Foods Contest, Horticulture Skill-A-Thon, and Consumer Decision Making Contest.

There were also 55 livestock exhibits representing Edmunds County. They had several members who were awarded top honors in their division. Junior Brady Beitelspacher received Champion Market Simmental Steer. Senior Bryce Beitelspacher received Overall Grand Champion in Beef Showmanship, Champion Division 3 Market Crossbred Steer, Grand Champion Crossbred Market Steer, and Reserve Champion Market Maine Anjou Steer. Beginner Mac Heinz received Grand Champion Commercial Roasters with his pair of Red rangers. Junior Haleigh Holt received Reserve Champion Breeding Simmental Heifer. Beginner Maggie Holt received Champion Breeding Hereford Heifer. Brady Kilber placed first and fourth in his classes of Targhee Breeding Sheep. Junior Kathryn Kilber received Reserve Grant Champion Targhee Breeding Sheep. Kathryn also placed first, second, and fifth in her Targhee Breeding Sheep classes. Tessa Kilber places first, second, and third in her Targhee Breeding Sheep classes. Avery Sylte places second in her Suffolk Breeding Sheep class and sixth in her Southdown class. Colby Sylte places fourth in his class of Suffolk Breeding Sheep. Josie Sylte Received Reserve Champion Suffolk Ram and places first and third in her Suffolk Breeding sheep class; she also received Champion French Lop Rabbit.

Several members participated in the Showmanship contests. Bryce Beitelspacher received a purple and was named Grand Champion Senior Beef Showman. Beginner Garrison Heinz received a purple in Poultry Showmanship. Beginner Alexis Fischer received a purple in Rabbit Showmanship. Beginner Jillian Fisher received a blue in Rabbit Showmanship. Junior Grant Fischer received a blue in Rabbit Showmanship. Beginner Kaleb Scherr received a blue in Dairy Cattle Showmanship.

There were nine entries in the Breeding Beef Class. In the Commercial division Cody Forkel received blue ribbon; he also received a blue ribbon for his Maintainer heifer. Haleigh Holt received a purple ribbon for her Charolais heifer; she also received a purple ribbon for her Simmental heifer. Maggie Holt received a purple ribbon for her Hereford heifer; she also received a purple ribbon for her Foundation Simmental heifer. Jacob Jung received a purple ribbon for his Charolais Composite heifer. In the Red Angus division Kale Pharis received a purple ribbon. Charli Rawden received a purple ribbon for her Mini Hereford heifer.

Market Beef had nine entries. Brady Beitelspacher received a purple ribbon for his Chianina market steer and a purple ribbon for his Simmental market steer. Bryce Beitelspacher received a purple ribbon for his Crossbred market steer and a purple ribbon for his Maine-Anjou market steer. Caleb Johnson received a blue and red for his Crossbred market steers. Gabriel Johnson received a blue for his Crossbred market steer. In the Market Heifer division Jacob Jung received a purple ribbon. Kale Paris received a purple ribbon for his Crossbred market steer.

Breeding Meat Goats had two entries. Paige Mehlberg received two red ribbons for her goats.

Market Meat Goats had three entries. Avery Sylte received red ribbon and Josie Sylte received a blue and a red ribbon.

Breeding Sheep had 13 entries. In the Targhee Division Brady Kilber received one purple and one blue ribbon, Kathryn Kilber two purple and one blue ribbon, and Tessa Kilber two purple and one blue ribbon. Brady and Kathryn received red ribbons in the Southdown division. In the Suffolk Division Josie Sylte received a purple ribbon. In the Commercial Meat Type Class Avery Sylte received a red ribbon, Colby Sylte a blue, and Josie Sylte a blue ribbon.

Poultry had 10 entries. Grant Fisher received a blue ribbon. Jillian Fischer a blue ribbon. Garrison Heinz received one purple, six blue ribbons, and a red ribbon.

Rabbit had 19 entries. Alexis Fischer received a blue and purple ribbon on her Dutch rabbits and a purple on her Netherland Dwarf. Grant Fischer received a purple and a blue on his Polish rabbits, a purple and two blues on his French Lops, and two blues on his Mini Satin rabbits. Jillian Fischer received two purples and a blue ribbon for her Polish rabbits, 3 purples for her French Lops, and a purple and blue ribbon for her Mini Satin rabbits. Josie Sylte received a purple ribbon for her French Lop rabbit.

Several members participated in Youth in Action Events. Grayson Beyers, Hannah Beyers, and Lincoln Beyers, were in the Special Foods Contest. Grayson received a purple ribbon for his Puff Pancake, Hannah received a purple ribbon for her Beef Stroganoff, and Lincoln received a purple ribbon for his Stovetop Mac & Cheese.

Participating in the Horticulture Skill-A-Thon was Myra Toennies. Myra placed first overall and received a purple ribbon, a plaque, and the first place rosette. Myra was also on the first place team with members from another county.

Participating in the Consumer Decision Making Contest were Senior Bridget Fuhrmann Junior Hannah Beyers, and Beginner Lincoln Beyers. Bridget received 5th place overall in the senior division and received a purple ribbon. Hannah placed 11th in the junior division for a purple ribbon and Lincoln placed 12th in the beginner division for a purple ribbon.
