I/EC Tigers stopped in overtime

September 18, 2019

Ipswich/Edmunds Central gave Langford a huge Lake Region Conference high school football scare last Friday in Langford. But the host team prevailed 26-20 in overtime. The loss dropped I/EC to 2-2 and the Tigers are now 1-1 in league play.

The Lions scored a late TD to send the game into OT, knotted at 20 all. (The PAT failed.) They added an OT touchdown and then intercepted a Tiger pass that ended the game.

The Lions had scored the game’s first TD and PATs for a 8-0 lead. They added a touchdown score to go up 14-0. But I/EC did manage a first-half score (that a 19-yard pass play from Ethan Gilbert to Josh McQuarie.) The PAT play failed leaving the Tigers down 14-6 at intermission.

Ipswich/EC added a third-quarter TD (a Carson Gohl run of eight yards) to pull to within two points, 14-12, entering the final quarter, an eventful one at that. Credit Ty Kadlec with a nine-yard scoring run plus PAT pass from Gilbert to Eric Severson for a 20-14 I/EC lead. That set the stage for a pair of Langford scoring plays, one in regulation and the other was the eventual game clincher, a six-yard pass from Colin Frey to Benton West. (That duo also had worked its TD magic in the final quarter.)

The statistics sort of indicated a wider outcome as the Tigers’ D would bend but not break thorughout much of the game. Langford chalked up 230 rushing yards, led by Frey with 119 yards. The hosts added a 205-yard passing evening from Frey for a very balanced offensive attack. Ipswich/EC gained 46 rushing yards led by Gohl with 13. Gilbert finished 10-22-3 throughout the air for 150 yards. McQuarie totaled two catches for 71 yards.

Defensively I/EC was led by Matt Hetttich with 10 solo tackles. Luke Peterson had eight and McQuarie six. The team had 38 solos and 27 assisted.

Ipswich/EC will host Warner on Friday in Ipswich for another LRC showdown.
