Ipswich Lions Club Immediate Past President Larry Stafford, left, presents a club patch for the first place honor of Club of the Year in District 5 South West to Les Forkel, current Ipswich Lions Club President.

The Ipswich Lions Club was recently named District 5 South West Lions Club of the year by District Secretary Neil Vollmer of Newell.

The club received the honor during the recent District 5 South West Fall Rally held in Mobridge. Other Lions Club winners taking home honors this year included: second place Rapid City Rushmore Lions Club, third place Custer Lions Club, fourth place Newell Lions Club and fifth place Piedmont Valley Lions Club.

The club of the year is awarded based on the number of local fundraising and community service activities each club performs during the year. The Ipswich Lions Club handles concessions for Ipswich High School Athletic Activities, awards four $500 scholarships each year to graduating seniors, helps support local causes such as the new Tiger Post building, donates to Lions International and Leader Dog programs to serve those in times of need. The cost to provide one leader dog to a visually impaired person costs upwards of $25,000.00 per dog.

The Ipswich Lions Club usually meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Agtegra Community Room. Club Officers for 2019-2020 include: Les Forkel, Club President; Jerry Brooks, First Vice President; Deanne Hoyle, Club Treasurer and Colleen Forkel, Club Secretary. If you think you might be interested in joining the Ipswich Lions Club, contact a club officer or member, new members are always welcome.
