Knowing you're going to have triplets would make parents excited and perhaps somewhat worried.

McKenzie and Chandler Preszler of Roscoe knew they had triplets coming. Then a pandemic came to the world.

Their babies arrived on April 16, 2020 at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls. They joined 13 other babies born that day at McKennan, a record number of babies delivered in one day.

The lone girl, Maevyn, out weighed her brothers by a few ounces at four pounds. Maddyx weighed 3 lbs. 11 oz. and McKynnon was 3 lbs. 5 oz.

McKenzie said the doctor explained that despite their small size it was a good size for triplets.

They had been splitting doctor appointments between Aberdeen and Sioux Falls. She said once it got to about 20 weeks the visits were always in Sioux Falls. Due to Covid-19 Chandler could not be present for the appointments with the doctor.

They had a C-section scheduled for April 27, which would have made them 34 weeks. (Pregnancy is generally thought to last 40 weeks.)

"At the April 16 appointment they said we had to deliver that day becuase of McKynnon's fetal growth restriction," McKenzie said. So they were delivered then at 32 weeks and three days.

"We would have liked to make it a little further but doctors all say they can't believe we made it that long," she said. "They're all doing quite well now," she added.

McKenzie and Chandler can both spend time with the babies in the "triplet room" in the Sioux Falls hospital. Only parents allowed. They can't leave the room without donning masks.

McKenzie said the triplet's grandmas are heartbroken they can't visit the babies. But they know they are at the safest place for the babies.

Chandler and McKenzie each have siblings in Sioux Falls, so they have places to stay.

They hope the babies will be able to come home in a few weeks. It depends on their progress in breathing and sucking, McKenzie said.

Chandler is the fifth grade teacher at Edmunds Central. He has been working with the class remotely from Sioux Falls. He is glad he was able to connect with the students, as opposed to having to get sub notes ready all the time.

McKenzie is a staff member at Agtegra Cooperative in Ipswich.
