The Ipswich girls' basketball varsity outlasted Wolsey-Wessington 55-45 last Wednesday afternoon in Wolsey.
Halle Heinz and Katie Bierman combined for 44 points, led by Heinz with 33 points and Bierman with 11. Heinz included two treys and Bierman, one. Next was Chesney Olivier with five points and Hailey Bierman, Lindsey Grabowska and Halie Feldman with two points each.
Mya Boomsma tallied 19 points to lead the hosts and Faith Nelson was next with nine points.
Ipswich had led 16-12 after a quarter and 24-21 at intermission. The Tigers also outscored their hosts 15-13 in the third quarter for a 39-34 edge with a quarter to play. And they were able to finish with that 10-point double-figure lead.
Ipswich shot 20-42 from the floor that day and included that trio of treys. The Tigers were 12-19 in free throw opportunities. The hosts went 16-42 in field-goal shooting and featured four treys, all by Boomsma. They were 9-12 at the line.
Ipswich enjoyed a 30-23 rebounding advantage, led by Hailey Bierman with six retrieves and Heinz with five. The Tigers only sustained seven turnovers and Wolsey-Wessington, 12, six of which were created by Ipswich steals. Heinz featured three of those steals.
The 6-1 Tigers will next host conference rival Warner on January 7 in the Tiger Den as part of a girls/boys twinbill. (Game postponed due to COVID)
