Local athletes win Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest

Free Throw winners with the basketballs they won, were, left to right, Brayden Heyne, Seth Hettick, Xavier Kadlec, Kaleb Scherr, Ben Hoyle, Ashton Heyne, and Emri Braun.

The Ipswich Knights of Columbus had their annual free throw competition on Jan. 17 in the Holy Cross gym.

Participants ages nine to 14 were welcome to compete in the event that has been held annually by the Knights of Columbus since 1972. Kids compete within their own gender and age divisons and progress from local level to regional and state/provincial contests.

The local respective girls and boys winners were:

9 years old - Emri Braun and Ben Hoyle

10 years old - Brayden Heyne

11 years old - Seth Hettick

12 years old - Ashton Heyne and Kaleb Scherr

14 years old - Xavier Kadlec

Contestants shoot 15 free throws. In case of any ties, five more shots are taken.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners indeed progressing through local, region, and state competitions. The Ipswich winners may qualify to compete in the regional competition in Aberdeen on January 31.
