Ipswich School welcomes four new teachers for the 2021-2022 school year

Ipswich School students headed back to school on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021.

Four new teachers welcome them. They are:

Doug Duncan

Teaching position: Title Math, Academic Success, Asst. Volleyball Coach

Family and Background: Wife - Amy; married daughter - Jeanna Cutler and her husband Forrest, her daughter (my granddaughter) Elowen; sons - Zachary, Ezekiel; daughters - Darby, Moira. Graduate of Groton H.S. 1992, Nebraska Christian College 1994, Northern State University 2001. Born in Detroit, Mich. Lived most of his life in South Dakota - Wakonda, Claremont, Groton, Aberdeen. Now live in Mellette, past 20 years

Teaching Experience: I have taught 20 years at Northwestern School. 17 years in second grade, one year in first grade, two years in the music department. I have coached Boys and Girls Basketball, Middle School Track and Volleyball.

This year I’m looking forward to — learning a new position. Working with students at many grade and ability levels. It will be a new challenge that I am already enjoying!

In my spare time I like to: Do crossword puzzles, go on Walmart dates with Amy (I try together to dance the aisles with me.), hang with my kids and grandchild (soon to be grandchildren), build LEGO sets, sit around campfires, and part-time pastor the Northwestern UMC.

Tricia Nehlich

Teaching position: PK-12th Gr. Full-Time Certified Substitute

Family and Background: I've lived in the area all my life. I graduated from Ipswich High in 1993 and NSU in 1997 with a Bachelor's degree in Education and minor in Early Childhood Education. My husband, Shawn, and son, Riley, farm and ranch where we reside, west of Ipswich. Son, Levi, is a sophomore this year and daughter, Ellie, is in the fifth grade, both at Ipswich Schools.

Teaching Experience: My teaching career started at Holy Cross Elementary, Ipswich, where I taught anything from Kindergarten through part-time fourth grade for a total of six years.  I then taught a year of Kindergarten for the Edmunds Central School District in Roscoe. Following that, I taught for the Faulkton School District teaching two years of Kindergarten through third grade at Thunderbird Colony School.  I then moved in-town where I taught their three-day-a-week Kindergarten program for another five years.  I took some time off to raise my family before returning to work for the Ipswich District teaching a year of Middle School Social Studies, in 2017-2018.  The following year I helped out at Wendy and April's Daycare teaching one day a week to preschool-aged students. I then returned to the Faulkton School District for two years teaching a second group of kindergarten students.

This year I’m looking forward to — getting to know all the students in the Ipswich School system! I'm also excited about the variety of work I'll be doing in the District!

In my spare time I like to: In my spare time I like to spend time with family and friends! I also enjoy:  long walks or jogs, baking, shopping, time in our pool and, when time allows, a good book!

Shannon VanHeerden

Teaching position: Third Grade Teacher

Family and Background: I am originally from Woonsocket, S.D. My husband, Christo, and our three children, Darius (5), Karlien (2), and Lukas (6 months), moved to Roscoe, where my husband works on a farm.

Teaching Experience: The 2021-2022 school year is my 11th year teaching and my first year teaching third grade! Out of college, I taught fifth grade in Plankinton for one year. From there, I went to Woonsocket Elementary and taught fifth grade for 9 years.

This year I’m looking forward to — building relationships with the staff and students and getting to know the ins and out of the Ipswich School District. I am very excited for the new position I am in.

In my spare time I like to: spend as much time with my family as I can. I also like to go shopping!

Sydney Krauter

Teaching position: JK-2 Pembrook Colony teacher

Family and Background: Originally from Rapid City, living in Aberdeen.

Teaching Experience: First year teacher graduated from Black Hills State University.

This year I’m looking forward to — getting to know all the smiling faces in my classroom.

In my spare time I like to: spend time with family and hike in the Black Hills when I get the chance.
