Edmunds County Sheriff candidates respond to questions

Bruce Sahli

Family and Background: I live in Roscoe with my wife Cindy. We have three adult children. I have lived in Edmunds County for most of my life. I lived in Montrose for two years when I was Chief of Police. I grew up in the family grocery business which I owned for 12 years. I have invested in this county my entire life. I was a volunteer firefighter for 32 years and an EMT for 20 years.

Why are you running for Edmunds County Sheriff? I am running for Sheriff because I know I will do a great job. I have 23 years of experience in law enforcement. I believe the dispatch center and the jail should remain open. I believe I can cut back on overtime and excessive spending. I believe in community-based policing. My deputies will be professional and courteous when dealing with the public. I believe we need to be seen at community and sporting events as much as possible. I will work with the cities to help with ordinance problems. I will have an open-door policy and we will respond to all calls, no matter how small they might be. Calls will be handled with fairness, understanding and compassion.

Why do you think you are the best candidate for the position? I am the best candidate for this position because of experience and knowledge. I have been a taxpayer in Edmunds County for 43 years. I feel I know the entire county and quite a lot of the people who live here. Because of my many years of involvement with the South Dakota Peace Officer Association, which I am presently the Past President, I have made many friends in law enforcement from across the state, which is very beneficial for the Sheriff. I am trustworthy, easy to talk with, fair and I care. It would be an honor to work for the citizens of Edmunds County as your Sheriff and your support on June 7 would be very much appreciated.

Jonathan Waldner

Family and Background: I grew up on Hutterville Colony in South Dakota and I am the oldest of seven siblings. When I was 18 years old, I left the colony to experience life outside of the colony. I worked in the construction industry for several years until I started my career in public safety as a correctional officer in Brown County in 2007. Soon after, I became a deputy in Spink County, South Dakota. After several years I transitioned back to Brown County as a correctional officer. In 2015, I was hired as a deputy in Edmunds County. In addition to my position as Edmunds County Deputy, I have worked part-time for Agtegra for the past several years. I have lived in Ipswich for the past seven years and am engaged to my fiancé, Deidre Lang.

Why are you running for Edmunds County Sheriff? I have currently been appointed interim Sheriff. Said appointment has put an end to my part-time job at Agtegra to allow me to give my full attention to this position. I have loved serving the people of Edmunds County and I hope to continue to do so from a new leadership position. I believe the Edmunds County Sheriff’s Department could do a better job at serving the people of Edmunds County, and that’s what I will strive to do. I do not believe the people of Edmunds County need a political Sheriff, but a constitutional Sheriff who looks out for the rights and safety of all residents.

Why do you think you are the best candidate for the position? I believe I am the best candidate for Sheriff as I have now served in Edmunds County for seven years, which has helped me build a great relationship with the current deputies and the residents of Edmunds County. I believe I know the needs of the residents and will use that knowledge to better serve them.
