Funeral services for Duane A. Holsing, 86, of Cresbard, were at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Richland Church, rural Mina, with Pastor Jason Dignan officiating. Burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Powell Township, will be at a later date.

Duane died Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Duane Arthur Holsing was born on the farm near Ipswich on June 28, 1936, to Arthur and Lillian (Simon) Holsing, the fourth of ten children. He attended all twelve years of school in Ipswich, graduating in 1955. While in high school, he played basketball and football, and being a farm boy, he was honored to be elected to lead the FFA Chapter as president. After high school, Duane worked as partsman for the Taylor Implement Company for several years. He then took the position of bookkeeper for the Ipswich Co-Op oil station.

In June of 1960, Duane married Arlene Sylte. They had a family of four sons, Kerwyn, Kerry, Jared and Troy. In 1963, they moved to the farm and have resided there for 60 years. Duane served his country by belonging to the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1964.

Farming was Duane's joy in life. He received many awards for outstanding achievements in wildlife habitat conservation and soil and water conservation. He was chosen for the S.D. Outstanding Young Farmer Award and went to the National Convention held at Marco Island, Fla., as a South Dakota representative. Along with Dean Hodson, Duane was the first to introduce the no till method of planting in Edmunds County. They bought a no till drill and later rented it out for others to try. He was also the first to plant soy beans in the area, proving that South Dakota could grow beans.

Duane loved hunting pheasants and deer. Every year in the fall, he would join his neighbors, the Powell hunting group, to go deer hunting in the Black Hills, staying in the town hall in Rochford. This group hunted together for many years.

Duane was a man that had a hard time expressing his feelings, but he loved deeply, showing his love by his actions. His 11 grandchildren were a source of joy and pride. He loved the Lord and his family.

Grateful for having shared Duane's life are his wife, Arlene Holsing; sons, Kerwyn (Dawn) Holsing of Cresbard, Kerry Holsing (Arda Demirjian) of Fall City, Wash., Jared (Janelle) Holsing of Sioux Falls, and Troy (Donna) Holsing of Horace, N.D .; grandchildren, Kindra Holsing of Des Moines, Ia., Joshua (Abby) Holsing of Rapid City, Shakinah Holsing of Cresbard, Kaleb Holsing of Cresbard, Riley (Hannah) Holsing of Cresbard, Nshan Demirjian of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, Jessalyn Holsing of Fort Worth, Tex., Jayci Holsing of Lawrence, Kan., Laikyn Holsing of Minneapolis, Minn., Logan Holsing of Grand Forks, N.D., and Lucas Holsing of Horace, N.D .; and siblings, Larry (Cheryl) Holsing, Marcene Bruckner, Carolyn Hieb, Kathy (Gary) Adam, Diane (Don) Hoyle, Sharon (Jim) Engler; brother-in-law, Wayne Wright; and sisters-in-law: Betsy Holsing and Margie Holsing.

Preceding Duane in death are his parents, Arthur and Lillian Holsing; siblings, Harlan Holsing, Arnold Holsing and Beverly Wright; and brothers-in-law, Verl Hieb and Tony Bruckner
