Berneice Margeson

Berneice Margeson, 103, of Roscoe, passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Her wishes were to be cremated.

Her memorial service will be Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roscoe. Pastor Tony Hansen will lead the service. A private family burial will be at Morningside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Berneice was born to Henry and Hannah (Christen) Schipke on November 29, 1919, at her family home in Roscoe. She was the youngest of three children with an older brother, Bill, and an older sister, Hazel. For most of her life, Berneice lived in Roscoe.

Berneice attended Roscoe High School and graduated in 1937. She then attended Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Jewett Drug in Aberdeen, where she met her future husband Harold Margeson.

Berneice and Harold were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roscoe on August 11, 1945, and together they had two daughters, Kay and Peggy. In 1948, they moved to Roscoe where Harold took a position at the First State Bank of Roscoe, and Berneice was as the clerk at the Roscoe Public School starting in the 1950's and later became the Business Manager. She retired in 1972.Music was a very important part of Berneice's life. She played the saxophone in the high school band, played the piano and for many years gave piano lessons to many children in Roscoe. Berneice enjoyed singing and sang in the church choir for many years.

To describe Berneice, you would say she always had a ZEST for life. She loved sports and played tennis in her youth, bowled, played darts, softball, and shuffleboard. After retiring, she took up tole painting and decorative oil painting. Harold and Berneice spent 19 years wintering in Mesa, Ariz., where she loved to do ceramics and oil canvas painting.

Berneice's parents instilled in her a love for nature which showed in both the beautiful indoor plants and the flowers in her yard every summer! Berneice was a charter member of the Ivy Circle Garden Club which was formed in 1954 and she continued to be a member until it disbanded.

Berneice is survived by her two daughters, Peg Margeson of Roscoe and Kay Henes of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Brian (Stacy) Prisbe and Heather Beal; three great-grandsons, Ben (Sidney) Prisbe, Sam Prisbe, and Noah Beal.

Berneice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold Margeson, her sister and brother-in-law, Hazel (John) Lindberg and her brother and sister-in-law, William (Ann) Schipke.
