Purple Up at Roscoe Legion

April 15 has been designated “Purple Up Day for Military Kids.”

To promote the new project, the Roscoe Legion Auxiliary will celebrate on April 14 at the Puzzle Contest/Pie and Ice Cream Social between 2 and 4 p.m. at the Legion Post in Roscoe.

Everyone is asked to bring new school supplies to be distributed to military connected children with at least one parent or guardian serving in the military on active, reserve, or National Guard duty. All supplies collected will be taken to Ellsworth Air Force Base.

The day is celebrated by wearing purple, so join in the fun with the Auxiliary members as they serve treats wearing purple. Purple indicates support of all the US Armes Forces through the combination of their colors.

This day offers communities the chance to recognize and thank military connected children for their unique contributions, strengths, and sacrifices. Military children are unique. They move 6-9 times during their parents’ military career. Most change schools more often than nonmilitary. Extended family lives great distances away. They are more likely to experience grief and loss at an early age. There is often family separation caused by frequent and lengthy deployments. They experience increased anxiety due to the potential for danger in their parents’ career. They have an altered sense of “home” due to temporary housing. Acknowledging Purple Up Day makes people aware of the importance of military kids.

Purple Up by wearing purple and donate new school items to the Roscoe American Legion on April 14.
