Mass of Christian Burial for Casper "Cap" A. Malsom, 89, of Ipswich, is 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ipswich.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. Fr. Timothy Smith will serve as Celebrant of the Mass. 

Cap was born on a farm northeast of Ipswich to Joseph and Elizabeth (Baer) Malsom on May 6, 1931, the eldest of six children. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Cap loved working on the farm and enjoyed working with horses and learning blacksmith work beside his father, crafting and making many things.

Uncle Sam found Cap's number and he was drafted in 1952 serving in the United States Marine Corps in Korea. He received his honorable discharge in May 1954 and returned to the family farm. Later that year he was able to purchase his own farm.

Cap met the love of his life, June Kiehn, and they were married in 1960. They made their home on Cap's farm. In 1968, they welcomed their son, Andrew, the pride and joy of this union. Cap was a true farmer and knew what hard work meant. He taught his son that if the job was not done well then it wasn't worth doing.

He was an honest and faithful man, thanking the Lord for all he was given. He was both a gentle man and a gentleman, always ready to help where and when needed. His grandchildren Joseph and Sarah meant the world to him so he and June would travel to Iowa many times to see them.

Cap was also a CASE man. All of his machinery and tractors were CASE. He took great pride in his equipment and could often be heard saying "If it ain't CASE, it ain't on my place."

He was a proud Marine and was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years. Cap was an active lifetime member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and had also served his community by being on the Belle Township Board most of his adult life.

Cap died Friday, June 19, 2020 at the Bowdle Hospital in Bowdle.

Thankful for having shared in his life are his loving wife, June, of Ipswich; son, Andrew (Linda) Malsom of Newton, Iowa; grandchildren, Joseph (US Navy) and Sarah of Newton, Iowa; brother, Stan (Diane) Malsom of Aberdeen; sisters, Marie (Howard) Pitz of Sioux Falls, Frances (Jerome) Lingor of Mesa, Ariz. and Margaret (David) Braun of Mina; sister-in-law, Julianna Malsom of Ipswich; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Val.
