Waubay/Summit stops Tiger basketball boys

December 15, 2021

Ipswich hung with a talented boys' high school basketball team Waubay/ Summit on December 11 at Waubay before eventually dropping a 47-36 non-conference verdict

The hosts would out-score the Tigers 17-11 in the final quarter to seal the deal. They had also established a 12-5 first-quarter advantage. But Ipswich owned the second quarter 9-7 and the third quarter's scoring was even steven at 11-11, leaving Ipswich down 30-25 with a quarter to play.

Ipswich obtained a double-double from Taylor Thorson to lead the way. The IHS senior tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds. Next was another senior Trevor Beyers with 11 points, featuring a trio of treys. Ian Beyers added eight points, followed by Ty Kadlec with a trey for his three points and Zach Geditz rounded out scoring with a basket. They are both IHS seniors, as well.

The Mustangs were led by Damon Opdahl with 17 points, which was also game high. J. Gulbraa also climbed their double-figure scoring plateau with 13 points, followed by Jonathan Johnston also in double figures with 11 points.

Ipswich shot 16 of 46 from the floor including those four treys but had only three trips to the free throw line with all misses. Waubay/Summit responded with a 18-48 floor-shot evening with six of them treys and was 5-8 in its own free throw opportunities.

The rebounding war resulted in Ipswich with 30 boards, including those 10 from Taylor Thorson. Trevor Beyers was next with seven. The hosts claimed 33 rebounds, featuring Gulbraa's nine. Ipswich and Waubay/Summit each sustained 19 turnovers. Twelve of theirs were steals, while Ipswich would come away with eight steals of its own, led by Carter Geditz with three. Each team handed out 13 assists with Ipswich led by four from Ian Beyers.

The IHS boys were to host North Central on December 14 along with the Tiger girls. And Ipswich will also host a girls/boys twinbill on Saturday versus Webster.
