After this past weekend this can be repeated: Our eyes were glued to the media news over the weekend and you all could most likely agree. Tena has a little to add. The Ipswich Summer Reading program closed their summer series last week with a 80th birthday party for Smokey the Bear. I sent a few celebrants to the party on July 17. When I was a child my dad worked for the Forest Service. I have always had the oldest Smokey, maybe a gift. He must be about 60 years old. Since then I have been a...

Last week we had a short daily downpour. Even with hail on Sunday behind our office. According to weather forecasters we may expect hot weather over the weekend starting Friday. What we don't know if the heat will dryout things yet. It was really humid and wet over the long Fourth of July weekend. This is probably a little unusual for this part of the planet. The gardens look great so far anyway. And you probably didn't have to water that. But the weeds certainly are thriving, and that's not...

A long July 4 weekend is scheduled for the area and nationwide as well. Mina Lake, for instance, has a full slate of activities, many of which are on July 3. Including fireworks, highlighted by a Lizzy Hofer Band concert. So bring your ears for that and the loud, loud, loud fireworks display. Faulkton will have its Wild West Day fireworks display on the 5th. They will have their bull riding event Friday. The parade is Saturday, July 6. The actual July 4, 1776 events created the initial holiday. The USPS mail service, as well as government...

I have mentioned in this column from time to time that June is going by way too rapidly despite several scheduled weekend events. And there appears to be at least one more June weekend event which we hope would gather steam to continue. Hopefully it would last more than a year in Aberdeen. There is a gospel music fest June 29-30 at 515 8th Ave. NW. So you might listen for musical fireworks from the bands. And then the long Fourth of July weekend with even more fireworks. And we hope that July might go past a little slower this year. It is one...

We forgot to remind you last week that your Edmunds County Tribune will arrive in your mail box a day late due to the Juneteenth remembrance on June 19. This week’s Tribune has photos of the busy Trail Days weekend activities. The office was one of the Amazing Race stops on Friday afternoon. Plenty of bikers stopped by to enjoy the games here at the mini-mall. We had a fishing pond. Your fishing pole was a straw that you used to pick up gold fish crackers. Then you moved them to a container. We will be eating gold fish for quite a while. The c...

The advanced weather forecast had indicated possible rain over the upcoming Trail Days week. This past Monday looked like showers were coming from the west. And they finally made it — but just for a bit. So we will see. It has been one of these summers, that’s for sure. Enjoy all the festivities that the Trail Days committee has planned this weekend. Thanks to all the folks who help with the planning and the volunteers....

Can you believe this, but you can brag, you guys endured May! But June always scheduled several weekend events including Ipswich’s Trail Days later in June. And as usual you could start the busy month’s weekend in Ft. Sisseton if you are history buffs or are looking for some great food booths and entertainment. Yes, July then rolls in with a bang. Starting with the 4th’s celebrations. And we then look forward to August which features 4-H Achievement Days, followed closely by the Ipswich Commercial Club City-Wide Rummage Sales. So you might...

This is the time for red, blue and white. Memorial Day is coming soon. Remember that if you have items for the newspaper. We would need those items on Friday. THANKS! If you happened to drive north past our house on 4th Street you would see a red, blue and white windsock. It is not exactly a U.S. flag pattern. The crossed pattern is Tena’s way of celebrating May 17 with the Norwegian flag. Syttende Mai (May 17) is independence day there. We left it hanging, flapping in the constant wind....

We have endured March-like temps recently. But hopefully it will start improving now that we are in to May, which is one of the busiest months of the entire year. That’s for sure. Hard to believe, but the Graduation edition is coming soon. Hint: if you want an ad in that newspaper call Tena (605-426-6471). It wouldn’t hurt to dry out just a bit. When we see the forecast mentions likely showers we head for our three rain gauges. Yes three! We like to average them out by dividing by three. As I am writing this I notice aother rain shower in pro...

Many of Saturday’s area high school events (including Ipswich) fell victim to rather disagreeable weather conditions. Oh well! Let’s hope that conditions return to more normal. But then again what is normal in our climate changed weather patterns? Good question — so we will have to wait and see! We want something that doesn’t mention that little four-letterword — wind! Yes, the wind can and does appear from several different directions and some times just in a single day. So I hope you haven’t put away your kites just yet. But you would proba...

It is certainly the time of year for sports’ fans. And I believe that true baseball fans really enjoy major league baseball as well. But we should mention that there is year-around NBA basketball with the women’s version during the summer and the men’s NBA still in progress. Yes it’s playoff time for men. The great college playoffs for both women and men won’t be forgotten. The women can play at a level of competition even exceeding the mens’ game in some aspects. This past D1 hoops certainly was one for the ages in both men and women’s act...

DEG saved this from last week after his column was X’d when it turned out the Council candidates were too long. So a few post-Easter thoughts. There is nothing tastier than leftovers, especially when they are ham dinners. Think of the many different ways you can cook it. Entire recipes or modifications of your own or someone’s that are quite different and unique. I am thinking in particular of the Holy Cross KC cheesy potatoes that went with their recent fish meals. You betcha, we did look on the internet for a substitute. And also as you can...

The long month of March is quickly coming to a close, as it always seems to. And along with that the Easter weekend is this week! So Happy Easter everybody! Be kind to the Easter Bunny and leave him (or her) some eggs or even candy. But before that we have to ask an old question: did March come in as a Lion and will it leave like a Lamb? I think the beginning of the month was Lamb-like. We already experienced some wintry weather last weekend, but that could have been a lot worse than the amounts that we measured! Easter week could include some...

  • Tigers compete at Fuller Invite at Northern State University

    -deg|Mar 27, 2024

Ipswich attended an indoor track and field meet called the Fuller Invite on Monday, March 18 in Aberdeen. Two of the individual highlights for the boys were Kyle Hettich's 55-Meter Dash win in 6.65 and Rasmus Loken's capture of the 55-Meter Hurdles in 8.88. And the Tiger boys added a 4x400 relay win in 3:49.28 ran by Hettich, Casey Geditz, Loken and Trevor Heinz. Meanwhile the IHS girls' top effort was a first by Madisyn Gellhaus in 5:40.72 in the 1600-Meter Run. (And her own teammate was next in 6:00.12 and that would of course be Gracyn Kadle...

The state's Class B boys basketball tournament certainly lived up to its pre-tourney hype and then some. The tournament concluded with a narrow championship win in overtime by Howard thus preventing DeSmet from obtaining its fourth straight title. They had to settle for second this time around. Under that new SoDak 16 format anybody could win this tournament if they would play the entire event again this week. And we had wondered how our Lake Region Conference member Leola-Frederick Area would do there and the answer was apparently not so...

Tornadoes rolled through Rapid City last weekend. Fortunately they weren't real tornadoes, but they were a girls basketball team playing in the State B there. That's right the Centerville Tornadoes would cap their amazing weekend with an impressively relatively easy championship night victory over Arlington, the top-seeded team entering the event. At the other end of the spectrum a Lake Region Conference and Region 1B member Warner didn't fare all that well. They would not manage to win a single tournament game including a seventh-place loss to...

Big surprise here, but the return of Daylight Savings Time is just around the corner. And I'm still getting used to the current time! I would imagine that would also be true for many of our readers if we took a poll. But it is between late winter and early spring according to my calendars. So sometimes you don't really receive a whole lot of daylight this time of the year anyway. It can be cloudy and or foggy for several days That has been especially true this year. But we can still get a lot of wind from time to time. So isn't March supposed...

  • Pirates steal win in Region 6B

    -deg|Mar 6, 2024

With Trevor Heinz still unavailable due to his hand injury, Ipswich would end up losing a Region 6B boys high school basketball verdict to Highmore-Harrold last Tuesday in the Tiger Den. The final score, 39-31, would prove to be the largest lead by either school in the entire game. Ipswich had narrowly led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but H-H would go ahead 20-16 at intermission and then lead 29-24 with a quarter to play. However Ipswich would stage a little fourth-quarter rally of its o...

  • Thunder stopped in Region opener

There was a really great Aberdeen Concert performance in the Johnson Fine Arts Center in Aberdeen last Thursday. It was three young ladies from the Los Angeles area, singing the popular hits from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The acoustics are amazing in that place for sure. Their voices totally overrode the canned background accompaniment music that you could not even tell it was there. I will have to admit that I remember or recognized each and every song even including their encore. Wow! Fast forward to last Friday in the same location! The stage was...

  • Great Plains boys get victory over NC

    -deg|Feb 28, 2024

The North Central varsity boys played Great Plains Lutheran in Aberdeen on Monday, Feb. 19 and the results would be a 51-29 defeat for the Thunder. North Central would actually lead 10-6 in the first quarter. But GPL would forge ahead 24-19 at intermission and would increase its advantage to 38-20 after three quarters were in the books. GPL would be led in scoring by Brody Scharlemann with 17 points and seven more of their roster were able to get into their scoring column. The Thunder were able to receive quite a balanced scoring effort led by...

  • NC vs Chargers battle in overtime

    -deg|Feb 28, 2024

The NC Thunder lost a difficult 60-50 boys varsity basketball outcome in OT to Sully Buttes last February 23. Indeed this game featured another OT when all was said and done. The score was all even at 50-50 at the end of regulation. But the Chargers would live up to their name and charge ahead with 10 unanswered OT points! They were led by Wesley Wittler with 31 points followed by Eli Mercer with his 16 points. Three additional Chargers would score. Meanwhile the Thunder were led by Donovan...

  • IHS Girls 1-1 in Region 6B play

    -deg|Feb 28, 2024

The Ipswich Tigers participated in two recent Region 6B girls basketball playoffs, winning their opener in Ipswich last Monday by a 44-32 verdict and then were defeated the next night at Lyman in a 64-25 outcome. First things first! Ipswich gradually pulled away from its opening night visitors from SBA. The first half was quite close. The Crusaders actually led 8-7 after the first quarter and each team scored eight points in the second quarter. But Ipswich would lead 30-23 with a quarter to...

  • Titans stop Tigers at home

    -deg|Feb 28, 2024

Ipswich hosted a difficult Lake Region Conference varsity basketball foe last Friday in the Tiger Den. And if you hadn't guessed they would be the Leola/Frederick Titans who would escape Ipswich with a 69-46 victory. They would lead at each of the quarter endings - 18-4, 32-17 and 60-34, respectively and of course by the final margin. They got balanced scoring led by Noah Kipley with 27 points and Brayden Sumption with 17 points and six additional LF players would score. Still without Trevor...

  • Thunder girls stopped in Region 6A play

The North Central Thunder were stopped by McLaughlin 60-27 in a Region 6A encounter last Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Miller. The Thunder were only down 5-3 at the first quarter break but would then fall behind 24-9 at halftime. And they would trail 49-23 after three quarters of play. But they were able to receive a balanced scoring effort that was led by Amree Vander Vorst with seven points including one trey. Next would become Alaina Dosch with her five points that also featured a trey. Katelyn Engelhart and Tylee Vander Vorst each added four points...
