Thunder boys play South Border

The North Central Thunder were defeated 60-38 by South Border (Wiskek/Ashley, N.D.) in boys varsity basketball action on December 19 there.

A 25-8 first-quarter deficit didn't help especially when the Thunder were then held scoreless 15-0 in the entire second quarter. And South Border narrowly outscored the Thunder 12-10 in the third stanza.

The North Dakota team was led in scoring by Kaden Bader with his 19 points and Colin Goettle added 14 points. Connor Kosiak also reached double figures with 10 points. Five other SB players would score.

The Thunder were led by Raynor Sprague with nine points. Dawson Walz added eight points and Kobe Wherry tallied five points including a trey and Jade Jacobs also netted five points. Brady Beitelspacher and Cole Beitelspacher each added four points to their cause and Cooper Oxner a trey.

The Thunder had 13 two-pointers, those two treys and six free throws. The hosts countered with 23 two pointers, three treys and five free throws.

The Thunder grabbed 29 rebounds led by Zane Haar, Sprague and Cole Beitelspacher with six each. South Border featured 33 rebounds.

North Central had 16 turnovers and South Border, 13. But the Thunder came up with 10 steals.

The Thunder boys and girls will end 2023’s action with a doubleheader in Timber Lake on Dec. 28.
