Paul Malsam

Paul Joseph Malsam, 96, of Hosmer, was granted his wish to enter the gates of heaven peacefully with family at his side on Palm Sunday morning, March 24, 2024, at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Roscoe, with Father Tim Cone officiating.

A time of fellowship and luncheon will follow the Mass at the American Legion in Roscoe.

Following the luncheon, burial with Military Honors will be at the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Hosmer.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, with a liturgical wake at 6 p.m., at Schriver's Memorial Chapel, 414 5th Avenue NW, Aberdeen. Visitation continues one hour before Mass at the church.

Paul was born on June 29, 1927, to Kasper and Margaret (Fischer) Malsam in their house on their family farm near Hillsview/ Hosmer, South Dakota, where Paul grew up. He was the middle child of seven children. He attended country school through the eighth grade.

Paul met the love of his life, Florence Heilman, at the age of 19 years. He was drafted at the age of 23 in 1951 to serve his country during the Korean War for 22 months. Paul and Florence married on November 5, 1952, and farmed and resided on Paul's grandparents' and parents' farm near Hillsview/Hosmer for 70 plus years until the summer of 2023 when Florence and Paul transitioned to Primrose Cottages, Aberdeen. Four months after Florence's passing, Paul was transitioned to Bethesda for the remaining two months of his life. Paul and Florence were blessed with nearly 71 years of marriage. Six daughters and four sons were honored to call Paul "Dad."

Paul was a lifetime Holy Trinity Catholic Church member and later St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. He was also a lifelong member of the American Legion and VFW. He loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and building and creating farm tools. Paul diligently prayed the rosary and prayed for his family or anyone in need. Praying for our country, the soldiers at war, and their families was important to him.

Paul is survived by his children, Judy (Gary) Weishaar of Hosmer, Linda Battest of Aberdeen, Tilly (David) Heier of Hosmer, Adam (Lauri) Malsam of Aberdeen, Martha (Damian) Kappenman of Eureka, Conrad (Jackie) Malsam of Hosmer, Cathy (Don) Mohr of Huron, Erv (Mary) Malsam of Aberdeen, Sheila (Dave Hagen) Malsam of Aberdeen; daughter-in-law, Dawn Malsam of Sioux Falls; one sister-in-law, Marion Malsam of Aberdeen; 30 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Kasper and Margaret Malsam; wife, Florence Malsam; son, Kasper Malsam; brothers, Jack Malsam, Pius Malsam, Matt Malsam, Henry Malsam; sisters, Maggie Geier, and Tilly Salwei.
