Ipswich boys busy last week

The Ipswich boys had a busy prep basketball schedule last week, resulting in a 1-2 record in their trio of games.

Their 60-52 win indeed came on Saturday, Jan. 19 at James Valley Christian in Huron. Ipswich led throughout and its largest lead during the game was 16 points early in the third quarter. The Tigers had opened with a 21-17 first-quarter edge and they led 36-26 at intermission. It was then 47-38 with a quarter to play.

The Tigers (and all scorers) were led by Ipswich's Ty Kadlec with 21 points, including five treys. Next was Will Kadlec with 10 points and a leading seven assists. Jaden Onken scored eight points and Carson Simes a pair of treys for his six points. Also credit Ben Kulesa with five points including a trey and Jacob Nierman also contributed five points. Max Geditz added a trey and Reese Moehlenbrink, a basket.

James Valley Christian obtained three double-figure scorers, led by Darrian Hood with 14 points, Josh Wieting with 13 and Colton Schweigert with 10.

Ipswich finished 21-56 in field-goal tries, including those nine treys. The Tigers were 9-12 in free throw attempts. The hosts were 19-53 from the floor with seven treys and 7-14 at the line.

Ipswich enjoyed a 41-35 rebounding edge and the Tigers were paced by Onken with seven retrieves and Kulesa and Will Kadlec with six each. The Tigers sustained 10 turnovers, JVC 11. Will Kadlec forced four of them with steals.

Ipswich had lost a 39-29 Lake Region Conference defensive struggle on Thursday in Faulkton. Ipswich had obtained a 11-10 first-quarter lead, but trailed 21-20 at the half. The Tigers then clung to a 27-25 third-quarter edge, but were outscored 14-2 in the final eight-minute span.

Nierman led Ipswich's offensive attack with 10 points, featuring a couple of treys. Simes added eight points, also including two treys and Ty Kadlec added six points with his two treys. Will Kadlec completed the ledger with five points.

Faulkton, meanwhile, featured the game's top scorer, Tyler Ogle, with 15 points.

Ipswich connected on 11 of 47 floor-shot attempts which included its six treys. But the Tigers only got to the free throw line five times, making a lone attempt. Faulkton netted 15 floor-shots that included two treys and was 7-13 in free throws.

Ipswich collected 40 rebounds led by Nierman's eight; Faulkton, 32. The Tigers sustained 19 turnovers and Faulkton incurred 14. Five of those were from IHS steals.

Then looking back to last Tuesday, the Ipswich boys dropped a 65-43 battle of the Tigers with Groton in the Ipswich Tiger Den. Ipswich trailed 9-8 after a quarter and 27-19 at intermission. The visitors then led 46-25 with a quarter to play and coasted to their win.

But Ipswich was led by Will Kadlec and Simes with eight points each and Simes included a trey. (Kadlec added five assists.) Next were Nierman and Geditz with six` points each and Nierman featured a trey. Five IHS players tallied three points each –- Kulesa on a trey, Onken, Ethan Gilbert on a trey, Jordan Richardt with a trey and Moehlenbrink).

Ipswich was 16-49 in floor-shot tries including those five treys. The IHS Tigers were 6-10 at the line.

Ipswich received a balanced rebounding effort led by Will Kadlec and Nierman with four each. The local Tiger team also committed 12 turnovers, but offset that to a certain extent with nine steals, led by Nierman's four.

Ipswich next hosts Herreid/Selby Area on January 25 in the Tiger Den for a girls/boys twinbill.
