Ipswich trails Corsica-Stickney in opener

Ipswich stunned Corsica-Stickney with an early 8-0 lead on opening day of the girls’ State B in Huron and still led 12-10 with a quarter in the books. Credit Abby Grabowska with a free throw to initiate Lady Tiger scoring and she then added a layup-up off a long Kamryn Heinz assist. Halle Heinz contributed a layup and a three-ball before Corsica-Stickney could get untracked.

But C-S fans, though out-numbered by a huge Ipswich fan base, would eventually celebrate a 61-32 victory. Their team oustcored Ipswich 19-8 in the second quarter and also won the third-quarter scoring derby 20-8. The Jaguars additionally outscored Ipswich 12-4 in the final stanza.

They were led by eighth-grader Avery Broughton’s 25 points, which was also a game-high performance. Next was Rachel Gerlach with 11 points and a couple more Jaguars, Courtney Manning and Raven Barse, managed double-figure scoring efforts with 10 points apiece. Payton DeLange added five points to complete their ledger.

Ipswich was led by Abby Grabowska with 11 points and she was the lone IHS double-figure scorer that evening. (She included a lone trey.) Kamryn Heinz finished with eight points, featuring a pair of treys and Halle Heinz was next with seven points, including a trey. Tessa Kilber rounded out the effort with six points, resulting from a couple of accurate three-balls.

Ipswich shot 11-33 from the floor and that included the half-dozen treys and the Lady Tigers were 4-8 in free throw attempts. Corsica-Stickney’s corresponding stats were 26-65 in floor-shot tries, including seven treys and a 2-5 free throw evening.

Ipswich committed 15 turnovers and the Jaguars only five. But three of those were from steals by Halle Heinz, Steger and Kilber. Ipswich was also out-rebounded 37-27, despite 10 rebounds by Kamryn Heinz.

The Jaguars would then advance to face De Smet in the Friday evening semifinals’ nightcap game, narrowly won by De Smet. Meanwhile, Ethan and Freeman faced off in their semifinal-round opener, which was quite handily won by Ethan.
