Track & field teams compete in Sisseton, head to Sioux Falls this weekend

Due to less than favorable weather conditions last Saturday, a scheduled track and field meet in Gettysburg was cancelled. But that was no problem for the Ipswich contingent. They still found a way to salvage the day.

“The middle school went to Mobridge and varsity went to Sisseton,” said IHS coach Todd Thorson. “They had an entry limit in Sisseton.” But there were enough Lady Tiger and Tiger thinclads to each finish a strong second in the team standings, second only to Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta, Minn. in both divisions. The Minnesota-based team edged the Lady Tigers

134.2 to 130.4 and the Tiger boys were out-distanced 121 to 92.5.

“The new state qualifiers were Aleah Steger’s 3,200 and the girls’ 4x8 (Tessa Kilber, Ashley Ptacek, Emily DeRaad and Aleah Steger) in 10:24.87 and Ben Kulesa in the 400 and 800,” Thorson added. “The vaulters improved their state-qualifying marks and so did Kamryn (Heinz) in the shot. And we were really close in a lot of other relays.” (Steger’s winning SQ 3,200-meter run was clocked at 12:18.65.)

One of those outstanding girls’ relay efforts for Ipswich was the 4x400 won in 4:21.11, run by Tessa Kilber, Halle Heinz, Bailey Hammrich and Taylor Maurer. Another was the medley team clocked at 4:43.10 consisting of Kendra Osborne, Bailey Hammrich, Halle Heinz and Emily DeRaad.

In more girls’ highlights, Tessa Kilber won the 400-meter dash in 1:05.61 and Kamryn Heinz won the shot put action at 38-00.50. And those vaulters indeed went 1-2-3, led by Mckenzie Evans at 9-03.00.

Now to that Kulesa SQ 400-meter run win. It was timed at :52.38 and he was also third in the 800-meter run with a SQ-clocking of 2:05.84.

Ipswich won the boys’ 4x100 in :46.08 (Ty Kadlec, William Kadlec, Matthew Hettich, Carson Simes). And Maxwell Geditz again won the high jump at 6-02.00, as did Reece Moehlenbrink at 46-00.00 in the shot put outcome.

The Ipswich track and field upcoming schedule includes the Howard Wood in Sioux Falls May 3-4 and some IHS thinclads will compete at O’Gorman on Friday, as well, according to Thorson. Then Ipswich will host the LRC in Ipswich on Tuesday, May 7 starting at 12:30 p.m. Then Ipswich will also host a varsity track meet on Friday, May 10. Field events will start at 1 p.m. and running events will start at 2 p.m. This will be a smaller meet with only five teams participating, allowing time for people to attend graduation parties that are planned on that evening.
