Ipswich-Edmunds Central team begins season on the road

I-EC football players practicing this week for their first game against Potter County in Gettysburg.

Coached by Brian Hogie, assisted by Tyler Severson and Austin Manzey, the 2019 Ipswich/Edmunds Central varsity football roster currently consists of 31 players.

Last year's Tiger team qualified for the post-season playoffs for the first time in a few seasons and the 2019 Tigers would certainly like to be in the hunt for a playoff berth again this year. The state championships will be hosted in Brookings this year, due to a remodeling project at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.

But talk about a tough schedule! The non-conference opponent slate will definitely be bolstered this year by Potter County, Sully Buttes, Deuel and Herreid/Selby Area. Yes, H-SA! The Tigers will actually play nine games this season, instead of the original planned eight. Herreid/Selby Area lost a North Dakota opponent that couldn't field a team on October 11, what would have been the Tigers' bye week. So the Wolverines will make the trip to Ipswich instead. And the Tigers will indeed kick off their challenging season this Friday evening against the PC Battlers in Gettysburg. The first Lake Region Conference clash and initial home game will be against Northwestern Area the following Friday.

What's Coach Hogie's take on that? "The non-conference games all have very good teams," he said. "We will once again have one of the tougher schedules in the state. Potter County is a well-coached team who brings back a very good QB. Deuel will return a good nucleus from last season. We also just added Herreid/Selby Area (that October 11 date that now will not be a bye week). Sully Buttes is a very good team with a lot of returning athletes."

Meanwhile, the I/EC roster features quite balanced participation between all four high school classes this season, led by seven seniors and eight additional upper-class eleventh-graders. The seniors alphabetically are: Tyrone Braun, Derrick Dobberpuhl, Ethan Gilbert, Carter Heinz, Lucas Metzinger, Jordan Richardt and Dillon Weig. Those juniors are Jacob Davies, Matthew Hettich, Kaden Hix, Josh McQuarie, Eric Severson, Tyler Tran, Jaden VanMatre and Logan Weig.

Sophomores are Trevor Beyers, Zach Geditz, Carson Gohl, Matthew Jaenisch, Colton Mohr, Jordan Nierman, Ty Kadlec and Luke Peterson.

The freshmen newcomers include Ian Beyers, Carter Geditz, Cody Hansen, Tyler Hettich, Cody Russell, Colby Sylte, Grant Weisser and Gavin Wollman.
