October 7, 2020

Ipswich had a busy cross country schedule last week. One highlight was that the varsity girls placed second in their respective team standings in Miller last Monday and then again at Highmore-Harrold on Saturday. The latter meet was won by the Kimball/ White Lake girls with their 15 team points and the Tigers next with 28. Thirteen teams were eligible for those team score standings. Earlier in the week in Miller, Ipswich had scored 23 girls' team points, second only to Aberdeen Christian with 13. Five teams could vie for contention in that event.

In Miller, Ipswich's top varsity girl was Ashlinn Hartwell in eighth at 22:29.05 followed by Emily DeRaad 11th in 22:53.97, and Sommer DeRaad 13th in 23:34.73. This event was won by Mobridge-Pollock's Heidi Olson in 20:18.72, followed by Abby Hasart of James Valley Christian in 21:22.39. In Highmore, though, the girls' varsity individual winner would prove to be Jolie Dugan of Jones County in 20:08.92, followed by Presley Terkildsen of Philip in 20:19.43. Hartwell dented the Top 10 in seventh at 21:07.28 and Sommer DeRaad was 11th in 21:24.58. Our third team scorer that day would be Gabrielle Wald 13th in 21:35.67, then Gracyn Kadlec in 15th in 21:45.34 followed by Ashley Ptacek in 18th in 22:07.04.

Ipswich won the girls' JV team standings, though with 6 team points at Miller and Warner was a distant second at 22. The race winner turned out to be none other than Ella Boekelheide of Northwestern in 16:43.83, but Ipswich's Kadlec was second in 17:29.63, followed by Wald and Ptacek tied for third at 18:13.98. Madisyn Gellhaus was fifth in 18:57.07, Reaghan Bowers sixth in 19:04.90 and Sienna Kessler also in the Top Ten at 19:05.18, good for seventh place. And Ava Davis just made the Top 10 as well, in tenth at 20:24.82! In Highmore, meanwhile, the girls JV won the JV team standings with nine points and Kimball/White Lake was next with 12 points. Gellhaus won that with a 22:20.44 clocking, topping a Herreid/Selby Area entrant, McKayla Hanson in 22:23.27. Bowers was fourth in 23:15.92, followed by Kessler at 23:47.37 in sixth. Davis was ninth in 26:52.19, followed by Natalie Crissman tenth in 28:04.77 and Makala DeRaad 12th in 29:47.50.

Ipswich entered some girls into the middle-school meet in Miller, as well, which was won by Northwestern's Tara Blachford in 13:02.71. Miller won that team title, while Ipswich was third. Ipswich's top competitor that day was Anna Nierman in tenth at 14:10.77, followed by Katelyn Tufte 11th in 14:11.06, Bella Unser 15th in 16:27.41 and Kearstin Pietz 20th in 17:44.79. In the Highmore middle-school girls' division, won by Mason Berg of Pierre in 10:13.81, Tufte was 27th in 11:48.34, followed by Nierman 28th in 11:49.21, Unser 45th in 13:43.10 and Pietz 50th in 14:41.74.

Now for the boys! The Miller varsity crown was worn by Justin Haven of Northwestern in 18:19.61, followed by Pierce Baumberger of Miller in 18:24.68. But Miller won the team title 15 to 23 over Mobridge-Pollock. Ipswich's lone entrant in this event would be Taylor Thorson in fourth at 18:54.93. But the Tiger JV efforts were another story. In Miller, Ipswich topped Northwestern 6 to 15 for the boys' JV crown, individually captured by Xavier Kadlec in 15:30.57. And his teammates were right behind with Evan Onken in second at 15:48.54 and Dylan Wald third in 15:56.74. They also won the team scoring 6 to 18 over Lower Brule at HH again led by Kadlec in 19:04.08 then Wald (19:54.09) and Onken third in 20:09.26.

Miller's Tyson Kindle won the Miller middle-school event in 11:18.68 with Ipswich's Clayton Horst earning a eighth-place placement in 13:22.60, followed by Tyler Gellhaus in 12th at 13:28.90 and Jon Kinz 19th in 14:57.39. But Faulkton won the team title 6 to 18 over the runners-up from Ipswich. At Highmore Horst was 29th in 11:20.35, Gellhaus 36th in 11:36.35 and Kintz 45th in 11:54.38.

One last item, you might want to know the varsity boys outcome in Highmore. Well, here they are! Miller also won the boys' varsity team title there with Kimball/White Lake the second-place team finishers. It was individually won by Daniel Ayoroa of James Valley Christian in 17:23.99. Once again the Tigers had just one entrant in that event — Taylor Thorson who placed 15th at 19:03.94.

The Lake Region Conference will be hosted by Ipswich at 12:30 p.m. today, Oct. 7 and it could be very competitive indeed. Coach Todd Thorson agrees: "I do think Northwestern has a really good boys team and the potential to have a great girls team. That seventh grade Boekelheide girl is going to be one of the state's best runners this year." And regarding Aberdeen Christian's league prospects Thorson said "Aberdeen Christian girls are ranked number one in state and Wall was second and Kimball third so I am glad we get to race these teams late in the season to get us ready for state." And the following Wednesday will indeed be the regionals in Gettysburg on the 14th.
