Fiddlin' Around

November 18, 2020

One down and one to go. What I'm referring were the remaining high school state athletic tournaments for the fall season. Football championships were decided last weekend in Vermillion and this week will be the state volleyball tournaments, including the State B in Huron.

The 9A football game in our division turned out to be a total defensive struggle with Warner coming out on the short end of the scoreboard, losing only to the defending champions from Canistota/Freeman last Thursday in the Dome. You don't expect low scoring in nine-man format on a regulation field and that is really the case in eight-man or six-man football. I heard that a particular eight-man outcome in Iowa sounded much more like an NBA basketball score.

Meanwhile, Ipswich lost a SoDak 16 high school volleyball to Hitchcock-Tulare last Tuesday, while our other Region 2B rep, Faulkton, was able win its ticket to the State B with a narrow SoDak 16 victory that same evening.

I would say in my opinion at least that volleyball skills require a whole lot more athleticism and teamwork that you could possibly imagine and these same skills should carry over into the basketball season. So it won't be long and we will be hearing the sounds of bouncing basketballs in both the girls and boys pre-season practice sessions. So good luck in that!
