Rose Schmaltz

Rose Schmaltz, 98, Bowdle, died Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, Bowdle, with Father Timothy Cone, Celebrant. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery.

Rose Schatz, daughter of Lugardia (Ziegler) and Anton Schatz, was born February 20, 1925 at Zeeland, N.D. She was descended from the Germans from Russia. She was raised near Zeeland attended Zeeland High School, graduating with the Class of 1943. She then taught rural school near Hague, N.D. She shared stories on the difficulty in getting to the school by horse and buggy in extremely difficult winter weather. She married Raymond Schmaltz at Zeeland on November 21, 1944. After farming near Hague, the couple relocated to a farm east of Bowdle in 1948. They relocated several times to farms in the Roscoe area.

When not working on the farm they joined bowling teams and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. They enjoyed traveling, with Washington DC and Santa Fe, New Mexico as highlights. In January 2010, Rose and Ray appeared on KELO TV where they discussed the recent snow and ice storms and how they toughed out these conditions for several weeks without electricity. Later that year, they moved to Bowdle where Rose enjoyed her home, gardening and riding her golf cart around town. She was an active member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church, and took great pride in sharing her vegetables and home baked goodies with friends.

Rose is survived by her son, Richard (Pat) Schmaltz, M.D., of Columbia, Mo .; her daughter, Bonadonna Ortiz of Annandale, Va .; her sister, Barbara Greffrey of Jamestown, N.D .; her brother, Benny Schatz of Coon Rapids, Minn .; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, on December 8, 2016; her father, Anton, on November 1, 1942; her mother, Lugardia, on December 26, 1989; son-in-law, Marshall Ortiz; four brothers (Joe, William, Anton, and Ray at age 3); one sister (Frances Bishop).

Honorary bearers will be Rose's grandchildren, Letitia Ortiz, Shonda Ellender, Chester Schmaltz, Allen Schmaltz, and Anastasia Schmaltz.

Casketbearers will be Pat Dewald, Norbert Thomas, Kevin Hoerner, Norbert Hoerner, and MyRon Zimmer of Bowdle; and Scott Heyne of Roscoe.

Organist will be Margy Bobby and lector will be Jennifer Heyne.
