Warner sneaks past I/EC Tigers

September 23, 2020

Losing narrowly by a single point 25-24 last Friday at Warner, Ipswich/Edmunds Central had scored the first and last touchdowns of the game. But Warner already scored what would be its last TD and thought it should be two-possession insurance against a late-game Tiger rally.

That’s because Warner’s first three TDs had all failed to produce any type of PAT success, leaving the Monarchs with 18 points entering the final quarter. But they did string together a successful TD drive quite late in the game to put 24 points on the scoreboard and they tried yet another PAT play. A PAT kick which split the uprights for that 2-possession lead with the game clock winding down!

But I/EC marched down the field, mostly through the air, with time running out, culminated by an Ian Beyers TD throw to Josh McQuarie. Ipswich/EC added a successful 2-pt. conversion from Ty Kadlec — the third time they had 2-pt. converted in as many tries for 24-points on the scoreboard.

With hardly any time left Ipswich/Edmunds Central needed to try an on-side kick which Warner recovered and the rest was history.

I/EC had led 8-0 on their opening drive — an Ian Beyers pass to Luke Peterson with the PAT play from Beyers to Carson Gohl. But Warner would score those three TD’s without any PATs for that 18-8 lead.

The Tigers did drive deep into enemy territory just before the half but weren’t able to punch it in. They would get a Luke Peterson 89-yard run to set up a wonderful scoring opportunity in the third quarter. Ian Beyers passed a short-throw to Peterson for the TD and then the same pair hooked up for the 2-pt conversion. But that would still leave I/EC down 18-16. That’s when the Monarchs would get those seven vital points for the Warner 25-16 lead.

Ipswich/EC gained 149 yards on the ground with Peterson’s 96 yards leading the way. Ian Beyers finished with 26 yards and Gohl was next with 20.

Ian Beyers also passed for 180 yards on a 19-35 effort, featuring the three TDs and no interceptions.

McQuarie was the leading receiver with 6 catches for 73 yards, followed by Kadlec’s 6 grabs for 56 yards.

I/EC had 70 tackles — 35 solos and 35 assists. Peterson had 13 on 10 solos and 3 assists. McQuarie also reached double figures with 5 of each for a total of 10.

This dropped I/EC to 3-1 and will head to Leola on Friday against North Border.
