IHS teams Lake Region Conference Champs

Ipswich Yearbook

Ipswich girls and boys were the conference champs last week in Ipswich.

Ipswich competed in the Lake Region Conference track and field meet last Thursday, hosted by Ipswich.

And that was an understatement! The Tigers actually dominated the meet, especially at the varsity level. (This meet featured both some varsity and middle-school events.) Ipswich swept the varsity team standings, winning the girls' event with 219.5 team points  and the Tiger boys scored 175 with Warner placing second in both cases. (The Monarch girls tallied 94.5 team points and their boys, 153.) Ipswich also won the middle-school girls' team title with 157 points, but Faulkton was the middle-school boys' league champion with 113 team points.

Yes the Tigers rolled up 394.50 combined girls/boys varsity team points with Warner a distant second at 247.5.

One example of that overall team depth was the girls' pole vault where Ipswich went 1-2-3-4 led by Quincy Olivier's 8-03.00 height and Kaitlyn Williams was second at 7-09.00, followed by Kathryn Kilber at 7-03.00 and Marley Guthmiller at  7-03.00. But event wins are always welcome, especially those multiple event winning individuals like Katelyn Geditz, who was indeed first in a pair of field events. She won the shot put at 31-03.00 and the discus at 100-09.

The Lady Tigers combined for one relay victory and that would be the 4x400 ran by Ashley Ptacek, Paige Mehlberg, Hailey Bierman and Emily DeRaad clocked at 4:33.11. Ptacek also earned first in the 400-meter dash timed at 1:05.61, where Vanesa Diaz was second at 1:05.76. Those second-place efforts also proved to help seal the IHS league efforts. Madisyn Gellhaus was second in the 1,600-meter run at 6:01.55 and Ashlinn Hartwell did likewise in the 3,200-meter event in 13:08.10. So did Ashlyn Weig in the 100-meter hurdles with her runner-up :18.94 clocking. Yet more  seconds were earned by Gracie Lange in the high jump at 4-10.00 and the triple-jump measured at 30-03.75.

Ipswich was also second in the girls' 4x100-meter relay ran by Trinity Reynolds, Reaghan Bowers, Halle Heinz and Paige Mehlberg in :55.96.

Now for the boys! Tyler Hettich won the high jump measured at 5-10.00 and Josh McQuarie was second there in 5-10.00 as well. Taylor Thorson was second in the pole vault at 8-03.00, as was Lucas Rowland in the shot put at 43-07.00. And Colby Sylte obtained a second in the triple jump at  40-04.50. The Tiger boys obtained some additional points in baton action, led by a second-place finish in the 4x400 at 3:46.22 (Dylan Owens, Ty Kadlec, Turner Thorson and Matthew Hettich.

The Region 2B meet is on Thursday, May 20 hosted by Gettysburg and the State B will take place in Rapid City on May 28 and 29.
