Tigers battle Warner into overtime

The Ipswich Tiger varsity boys were out-scored 4-3 in an overtime period versus Warner on January 6 in Warner.

This boys LRC clash indeed went into overtime tied at 47-all, thanks an Ian Beyers free throw near the end of regulation. But Ipswich's lone score in the OT would prove to be a Trevor Heinz trey that briefly lifted the Tigers into a narrow 50-49 lead. However the Tigers weren't able to come away with a much needed defensive stop. Instead the Monarchs manufactured a 51-50 lead of their own which would indeed stand. That's because Ipswich would miss a three-point shot with time running out and the hosts would celebrate.

Ipswich's largest lead during the back-and-forth game would be 46-38 after a Ty Kadlec trey. But that's when the Monarchs would begin chipping away at their deficit!

Ipswich had fallen behind 16-6 after a quarter. But the Tigers responded with a 14-10 second-quarter scoring advantage to claw back into the fray. A Kadlec basket would then end the third quarter's scoring with a drive into the lane for a 36-33 IHS edge entering the final stanza.

The leading scorer in the game would prove to be Trekk Hannahs of Warner with a 21-point evening. Hunter Cramer was next with 17 points capped by his game-winning basket. Only four other Monarch boys would score that evening.

Meanwhile Ipswich countered with 16 points from Ian Beyers that included three treys. Two Tigers each scored nine points —Heinz and Trevor Beyers with three treys apiece for all of their points. Colby Sylte also included one trey for all of his points, while Kadlec finished with seven points including that other trey and Taylor Thorson, Carter Geditz, and Zach Geditz each contributed a basket apiece.

That all equated to a total of 11 treys by the Tigers, while the Monarchs featured six treys. Ipswich made 19 overall floor shots along with that free throw and Warner countered with 19 baskets as well, but included those six accurate treys and seven free throws. So this game definitely proved how important a few free throws can become.

Turnovers can also be crucial some nights, but in this instance Warner would actually become the team with more turnovers, 14 and Ipswich, seven. Rebounding was quite similar, though, with Warner only having two more than Ipswich's 28. The Tigers were led by Thorson and Zach Geditz with five rebounds apiece.
